Captain Roshanara Rahman walked into the office to find her friend--and now technically superior officer--sitting behind her own desk, looking over various PADDs before the Bajoran turned her head up to see Rahman.
Rahman: You look right at home there, sir.
Oddas: Response
Roshanara walked up to the desk and smiled.
Rahman: The Kitty Hawk is ready to get back underway to the Delta Quadrant, so I wanted to meet with you one last time--to wish you well and good-bye. It's quite possible we might not see each other for some time...
Years really, although that was understood unsaid between the two women.
Oddas: Response
Rahman: Hmmmph, if I could tell the young lieutenant who excitedly spent all those hours working in the lab, checking countless equations and calculations because she was too stubborn to accept a "self-imposed" limit... I wonder what she'd think if I told her that one day she'd be leading her own crew out on the frontier, investigating an alien megastructure.
Oddas: Response
Rahman: "The only true limits are those we put on ourselves." That's what always motivated me while we worked on the Warp XV engine.
Oddas: Response
Rahman: Working on an engine is one thing... working with a crew... well, I know you've learned how much more of a challenge that is. Warp field dynamics are one thing... mentoring and managing people are another entirely.
Oddas: Response
Rahman: Just do me a favor while you're out here, will you, Fleet Captain?
Roshanara took a moment to glance around the room.
Rahman: Just don't let yourself get stuck in here all the time--as nice as it is. A gilded cage is still a cage.
Rahman: What I mean is, you may be the captain, and you may have your duties. But you also have a duty to yourself--to make sure you get to do some real exploring of your own. So make sure you get out there, whether it's on the RIng or beyond. There's a whole world waiting out there.
Oddas: Response
Roshanara smiled one last time at her friend before they walked around the desk together and embraced each other in a hug.
Rahman: Stay safe out here, promise me.
After squeezing her tight for one more moment, she stepped back, feeling the emotions make her eyes wet.
Rahman: I'll be sure to send you a postcard when I get out there.
Oddas: Response
Rahman: ::nods:: =/\= Rahman to Kitty Hawk. One to beam up. =/\=
And soon a swirl of light took Roshanara back up to her ship, where she'd head out once more into the stars.
