Dekas: Alright, let’s see if this thing can manage to make a salad now.
As the man ordered the salad, she waited for the computer to screw it up like it had been. However, she was pleasantly surprised when it came out chilly, but not covered in ice.
Leix: ::grins:: Well, Lieutenant, it would seem you’re a miracle worker.
Dekas: Can’t be too sure it wasn’t a fluke, I’m going to ask it for something that’s meant to be more of a temperature. Ah… Computer, a coffee, hot. And vanilla ice cream.
This would be the real test. Dekas was putting it through its paces. If it passed this test, he would be leaving it in better working order than when she’d arrived. This time, she was unsurprised when the requested items came out at the perfect temperature.
Leix: Excellent. ::grins:: Are you still on shift or would you like to join me for a few bites of a delicious victory treat?
Dekas: If you are okay with it, then I would love to stay a few minutes. I like new friends.
She grinned, pleased that the Engineer had agreed to stay. Retrieving an extra spoon from the replicator, she then returned to the table and offered it to him before digging in for her first bite of ice cream.
Dekas: And… it will likely keep me from taking any other extra morning requests and unintentionally ending up late to meeting with Captain Oddas and Commander Qinn this morning on Denali Station.
She arched an eyebrow. He had a meeting with the Captain? How interesting. She’d been asked to check out the barracks for the Marines and meet up with the Captain later in the afternoon. It seemed she had a busy schedule today.
Leix: Oh?
Dekas: I was offered the job of heading up the Infrastructure Development. Which is an honor, and a surprise. I’m excited. I am also somewhat nervous. Too many hours to overthink it last night. I will feel better once I am no longer waiting.
She shook her head and chuckled. She knew that feeling well. The night before her first day of boot camp, she hadn’t been able to sleep a wink. Her shuttle flight had been bright and early the next morning, so she’d been far from bushy tailed and had gotten a thorough dressing down from her squadron commander for nodding off during the first lecture of the day. Needless to say, she’d developed a coffee addiction by the time boot camp was over and it had taken her a very miserable week to wean completely back off of it.
Leix: I know that feeling. That was me when I first joined the Starfleet Marines. Didn’t sleep at all the night before I was so anxious. ::pauses:: Congratulations, though. Those special assignments can be real career-definers. And at Lieutenant. Impressive.
Dekas: ::nodding:: Should be interesting. ::pause:: You mentioned you had a son, is he joining you on the Station? Or perhaps he’s with the other partner. Or you could have multiple partners. ::beat:: Or none at all. ::he tried not to assume, but he was as prone to it as anyone:: I suppose the better question is whether he is with you or elsewhere? I am always curious about family in Starfleet as it always seems so varied in how they function.
She laughed, very used to the questions by now when she mentioned her son. Motherhood hadn’t really been part of her life plan and this had just fallen into her lap. Her heart had ached for the boy, him being an orphan and all. He reminded her of her at that age, but he genuinely had had no one. At least she’d had her Gran.
Leix: ::grins and shakes her head:: It’s fine. I’m used to it. ::pauses:: He was 11 when I found him. I stumbled across him at an Orion slave market as my squadron was wrapping up a mission. ::chuckles:: Lad had apparently been trained by his master to pick the pockets of unsuspecting patrons.
Dekas: Response
Leix: ::shakes her head:: I caught him in the act, actually. He expected me to turn him in or do something terrible, I think, because he started begging me to let him go and he’d return my things.
Dekas: Response
Leix: ::grins:: He was so scared. I insisted that he take me to his master. He had no idea what I planned to do. There was quite a bit of haggling and subtle threats, but I was finally able to buy his freedom. Brought him back to Earth with me and my Gran looked after him when I was away. He started his first year at the Academy last fall. Majoring in Science with an emphasis in Linguistics and a minor in Helm.
