((Vermillion Wastes, Gateside Dimension))

The team had prepared the endothermic bomb and deployed it, with Spelvan doing the big dtop.

Spelvan: And now, I suppose, we wait.

Reynolds/Valek: Response

They stood in silence until the timer was supposed to go off, and there was a small, almost imperceptible rumble under their feet. All the time, Spelvan kept his eyes on the tree, searching for any changes.

Changes did begin to occur - strange, unexpected ones. The officers watched as the vines tightly wound around the tree sloughed off, as if their energy had been sapped. The ground surrounding the tree began to change color to an azure color, and grasses in the same deep blue began to sprout from the earth. Spelvan continued to watch, transfixed.

Spelvan: Perhaps this is what dormancy passes for in this dimension.

Reynolds/Valek: Response

After staring in awe for a long moment, it occurred to Spelvan that he should try passively scanning the area. He hoped that their scanners wouldn't go in the fritz like they did before, but they seemed to be operating normally.

Spelvan: What are your scans showing, Admiral? The temperature at the center of the tree is now 4 degrees Celsius and dropping.

Reynolds/Valek: Response

He wondered not for the first time if the vines had infected this environment from some other, more hostile place. It would certainly corroborate Valek' story - though his tale was somewhat unverifiable, all things considered.

Spelvan: The EM resonance levels are also slowly dropping.

Reynolds/Valek: Response
