Taelon: Not yet. I wonder - if Janeway’s Nanophage is off the table, do they have protection against that entire class of weapon? ::He looked to Nera.:: We have biosamples from the autopsies of the crew - shall we compare those nanites to these older ones? Those are probably, um, a more accurate reflection of what we’ll face…

Nera: We should ::nodding:: We’ve come this far after all

Nera, too, went back to work, setting up a new test zone.

Sevo: Response

Taelon: If we’re lucky, they only adjusted for Janeway’s nanophage - but the Borg tend to be through. They might be more aggressive towards foreign nanites on principle, now…

Nera: That’s my worry. They do have a tendency to overcompensate once they’ve identified a potential threat.

The Ensign moved to one of the biosample storage units, withdrawing a slim vial that Taelon could safely assume contained one of their collected samples.

Sevo: Response

Taelon: Only one way to find out - let’s run the same protocols, but with the modern variant. Ensign, if you’d be so kind…

Nera: It would be my pleasure…alright, introducing one current generation Omega nanite to the new test zone.

Nera added it to the machine, the microscopic nanite only visible through many, many degrees of magnification. It was, at glance, clearly more refined than the older example. Taelon could immediately appreciate the increased complexity; this one was almost virus-like, round and with a more complex set of spines.

Sevo: Response

Nera: Well, some visual differences to Georgia’s sample. Circular, more “feelers”, and there’s that cone attachment…can’t be superficial. The Borg aren’t the superficial sort.

Taelon: Would that they were.

The tall man pressed his face down into the telescopic viewer, the rubber housing meant to shield his eyes from all but the light of the zoomed in scanner’s screen. He made a soft little noise as he looked at it.

Taelon: The cone attachment is almost certainly meant for penetration into membranes and cell walls. Efficient, if somewhat diabolical.

Sevo: Response

Nera: We’ll start with giving it a little power ::tapping the control interface:: Alright, we’ve got life. Guess it’s set to seek out others of its kind as well automatically.

It wiggled a bit, but as it didn’t have anything to interact with, it went into a standby mode quickly. More quickly than the older one had, too.

Sevo: Response

Nera: Decoy ready, introducing it to the test space…the nanites registered it, quickly too ::frowning at the monitor:: these energy readings we’re getting are markedly different though. What’s it doing?

The nanite zipped through the neutral testing medium, cone-like protrusion at the fore. It located the decoy with alarming speed and latched on, tiny feelers holding the decoy in place. Then it turned the cone against the decoy’s cell wall and punched through it.

The decoy began to rapidly disintegrate, the nanite ripping up the remains and, seemingly,m devouring them. In the blink of an eye the decoy was gone, only fragments remaining.

Taelon cursed in a language the translators didn’t pick up; he all but hissed.

Taelon: Inshadii. It ate it.

Sevo / Nera: Response

Taelon: Extremely aggressive. Ensign - introduce some of the nanophage. Multiple injections, if you will..

Sevo / Nera: Response

The small cells of the nanophage flooded into the medium, distinct in their makeup; small, circular, with a thick membrane and their payload hidden deep within. The Omega nanite went to work with the same level of aggression, ripping its way through the outer membranes in record time.

Taelon: I…think it’s safe to say the nanophage triggers an extreme response…no wonder the assimilation happens so quickly.

Sevo / Nera: Response
