((Cyrithra Forest, Palanon))

Sitting on the rough log, feeling the warmth of the fire, surrounded my a mixture of trees and friends, Doctor Loxley was content.

Loxley: oO Perhaps this is my new ‘happy place’ next time I meditate? Alieth might even approve of it… Oo

Beside him, the conversation with his companions had turned to the natural world (which, given their surroundings, was not unexpected) and art as Bryce fished around for some examples of things he’d been working on.

Tahna: Perhaps we can arrange another nature outing before we’re called off to save the galaxy again.

Tagren-Quinn: I think– I think that would be grand. Lox?

Loxley: Absolutely. I used to hike a lot back on Earth. But I’ve only managed it once while I’ve been on the Gorkon I think, back on Vaeron.

Tagren-Quinn: Here we are.

He ran a hand through his dark hair before he handed the device to Meru.

Tagren-Quinn: I’ll admit–

Bryce paused and his expression grew distant for a moment as if he was searching for the right words. An absently-bouncing knee suggested nervousness.

Tagren-Quinn: –recovery was a beast to this menace. ::A short laugh, unable to meet either of their gazes.:: Physiotherapy, constant injections and tests. I’ll, uh, need a follow-up with you on the Gorkon in a few days, Lox, once I get settled back in.

Loxley’s own expression changed a little to match Bryce’s, becoming more serious. Since returning from the rogue planet Lox had been meaning to check in on Bryce, see how he was doing, but the crisis on Palanon had taken up all of his time. Which meant he had very little idea what Bryce had been through, just those initial scans when he’d found the El Aurian hybrid and the limited facilities on the runabout. But clearly it had been very traumatic, mentally and physically.

Loxley: Of course. ::his expression softened and he offered a smile:: Whenever you’re ready.

Tagren-Quinn: Anyway, not talking shop– The drawing helped to get my mind off things for a little while in between treatments. Another nature outing would probably be good medicine, too, for us all, if we can manage it before the next adventurous plunge.

A small smirk, a fleeting eye contact, and Meru nodded.

Loxley: Definitely! What’s the point in flying around the quadrant in a fancy space ship visiting all these planets if you don’t get to actually walk on them, see their sights, breathe their air.

To emphasize his point, Lox took a deep breath just as a slight gust of wind blew the wood smoke towards them. He managed to keep his coughing to a minimum.

Tahna: Nature is great for the soul. I’ve done nothing but work and rearrange my quarters lately, and it’s kinda lonely there.

Tagren-Quinn: Response

There was another brief pause as Meru looked away into the crowd. Lox felt he’d missed something, but then he’d never been very good at picking up on stuff like that. In any case, the subject was soon changed as the Bajoran turned her attention to Bryce’s art.

Tahna: My father’s an artist, I never figured it out. Makes all this extra impressive. I like the way you use color.

Tagren-Quinn: Thank you kindly. That means a lot.

Lox shuffled closer to get a look at the screen and murmured his approval.

Tahna: Aw, he's cute. Are you related?

Loxley: ::grinning:: The boy or the lizard?

Tagren-Quinn: Ah, yes, that’s my nephew. Rory. He likes to go on “creature hunts,” much to my sister's dismay.

Loxley: A fine past time to be encouraged. Especially when you can do it from a distance and not be involved in cleaning up the mud and so on.

Tahna: Response

As they finished the mini-gallery of art, Bryce took the device back to put away. Lox took the opportunity to finish off his drink just as a familiar animal sound echoed around the clearing.

Tagren-Quinn: Speaking of the animals from the Gorkon I see–or hear, rather?

Bryce unfolded his legs and stood up to get a better look.

Tagren-Quinn: Commander Alieth’s dog? Uhh-hahaha. Chestnut, is it? Cheddarcakes?

Loxley: Ah. Cheesecake. I don’t think I’ve yet had the pleasure. I’ve certainly heard him on many occasions. ::he paused:: Although I really like the name “Cheddarcakes”.

Tahna: Response

Tagren-Quinn: Ah, that’s right. ::A slight chuckle of embarrassment as he plopped back down into the chair, still getting used to his height.:: I’ve not yet had a chance to meet Cheesecake, so that’ll be my excuse. I know that we just talked about this.

Loxley: The Gorkon menagerie is a sprawling affair, it’s hard to keep up with all of the members.

Tahna: Response

Tagren-Quinn: So, umm, did either of you have a chance to take any downtime during…umm… well, I guess it’s leave, but I know that you all have had lots going on, so.

Lox tried to keep his expression static but he felt his lip twist into a wry smile and sadness crept into his eyes. The only downtime he’d managed had been face-down in a pillow. Occasionally his own, mostly a borrowed one. He’d barely even seen Corliss since their hurried reunion in the museum/hospital.
And his mind was still distracted by the conditions of several dozen patients, people whose lives he had touched very briefly during a very traumatic time. But their ultimate fate would, he knew, remain a mystery to him, passed off to hospitals elsewhere on the moon to heal and recover or… not

Loxley: No… not as such. Not until tonight, anyway.

Tagren-Quinn/Tahna: Response

Loxley: I was planning on making up for it by fitting in as much socialising tonight as possible. ::he shrugged:: Maybe go for a jog around the camp, play some games, host that dinner party, drink copious amounts of caffeine and all those fun shore leave things. But.. ::he interlocked his fingers:: …all mashed together at the same time in One Giant Shenanigan.

Tagren-Quinn/Tahna: Response

Loxley: I think it would be highly amusing to watch Meru preparing hasperat while climbing a tree and petting Cheesecake.

Tagren-Quinn/Tahna: Response

Looking around the camp with a smile once again on his face, Lox took stock of his friends and colleagues. They were a fine group to spend your life with, sure enough. As he pushed his cap a little further back up in order to scratch at one pointed ear, a gathering caught his attention.

Loxley: Uh-oh.

Tagren-Quinn/Tahna: Response

Loxley: ::gesturing across the clearing:: It looks like our Admiral and FO are conspiring. We may have to put the multi-task all-in-one shore leave mega-event to one side for a while.

Tagren-Quinn/Tahna: Response
