Stop-gap measures were just that, stop-gaps never meant as final solutions.  That would have to be putting the AQS into it’s minimum output mode while bringing the backup system online.  The trio of officers initiated the controlled output reduction.  There was an audible reduction in the background noise as the fuel flow reduced and the core began generating less power, the ever present WHOM becoming more of a whimper.

Sevo: Did…did it work?

zh’Tisav: It appears so.  Fuel flow is at the lowest it can go without physically cutting the line.  And there’s less stress on the grid.

Some of the lines on the MSD had turned from sad amber to happy green, while others had stubbornly refused to change.

Kairis: Response

Sevo: Stress on the core is decreasing slightly, along with a corresponding decrease in feedback from the gate.

zh’Tisav: Good.  Maybe now we’ll get somewhere.

Kairis: Response

Sevo: I was expecting more; like power outages like you predicted.

zh’Tisav: It could still happen as everything settles down.  Especially now that you’ve, what’s the Human phrase?  “Jinxed” us?

Kairis: Response

A panel by the door popped loudly, showering the floor with sparks and darkening.  One eyebrow raised, the zhen glanced toward Ayiana, her point made for her.  At least it wasn’t anything major.  Like, you know, the core.

zh’Tisav: See?

Sevo: Uh…sorry? ::She smirked. ::

Kairis: Response

zh’Tisav: That being said, everything seems to be stabilizing.  Core output is steady, and the backups seem to be handling everything.  I want to give it a bit more time, but if it stays steady we can think about shunting the core into a dummy circuit.

Sevo: Good. ::She returned her attention to her panel.:: Everything seems to be relatively stable, so far.

Kairis: Response

The MSD chirped.  Two sections of an EPS line had blinked amber, followed quickly by a third.  It could have been localized failures, but the timing and direction were suspicious.  Whatever it was was obviously moving toward them.

zh’Tisav: There’s a rolling failure coming from... ::She checked the map, then glanced around the room, finding the same ID number by a service tube just above head height.:: … that service trunk.  And it’s moving our way.

Sevo: The vines, you think?

Kairis: Response

Sevo: How long until they get here?

zh’Tisav: Not long, I don’t think.  Unless this is just a growth spurt, which, somehow, I’m doubtful of.

Kairis: Response

The Trill looked over the different displays.

Sevo: Is there anything else we can do? What about that deterrence your team was working on? Can that be applied here?

zh’Tisav: I don’t think so.  It used a subspace coil, and they wouldn’t have them around here.

Kairis: Response

A loud shuddering noise made Vylaa’s antennae squirm, sway, then swing toward the sound.  Panels sparked and exploded on that side of the room, and the MSD started lighting up like a drunken Christmas tree.

Sevo: What the hell was that?!

zh’Tisav: Not sure.  It’s still going.  ::Her antennae were stock still, stretching toward the source.::  Low frequency, sub-twenty hertz, below most species’ hearing range.  Wait...  ::She paused, now recognizing it.::  That’s metal tearing slowly.

Kairis: Response

zh’Tisav: We do know those vines can break through metal, so this could be a sign of increased activity on their part.

Sevo / Kairis: Response

zh’Tisav: This started after we lowered the core output, I can’t help but think it’s connected, that we’ve disturbed a shax nest here.

Vylaa couldn’t suppress a shudder.  She told herself it was from mentioning the tiny, nearly microscopic Andorian arachnids that laid their eggs in a hosts skin.  But deep down she knew the vines were moving with a purpose.  She’d gotten the sense first from the sample in the annex that there was an intelligence there, maybe not directly, but behind, like a puppet master.

Sevo / Kairis: Response

zh’Tisav: We can try a forcefield, it should at least buy us some time.

Sevo / Kairis: Response
