(( Deep Trenches, Deluvia IV ))
As the trio swam the deep trench of Deluvia iV the conversation turned to the topic of scientific discovery. Commander Sevo had asked if they’d made any interesting discoveries and while Maezel was only just starting out in her science career, she did have a
number of stories from back home she could share.
Fenn: Well no alternative timelines yet but we’ll see what happens. :: pausing to think:: I did get to tag this massive whale once back on Bolarus that got close to one of my family’s oceanic mines. It wasn't record breaking by any means but it was about 30
meters long and very curious. It allowed me to swim alongside it for a while. We spent two weeks tracking its migration pattern discovering that it travelled between the warmest parts of the ocean.
Sevo: Response
V'Lar: Thirty meters is indeed a substantial specimen, Ensign. I would be interested to see a size-frequency distribution for such a creature. Would that be considered average?
Fenn: On Bolarus, for that species, it’s the expected median length of such a creature, yes.
Fenn remembered seeing much bigger specimens than that but that time was always the one she remembered. It had been the first time she’d been able to swim near to such a creature and the experience occupied a special place in her memory. She couldn’t help but
smile as the memory replayed briefly in her mind.
V'Lar: Fascinating.
Fenn: I thought so too! If you want to see those size-frequency distributions then let me know, my family keeps the records I’d just need to request them.
Sevo: Response
V'Lar: Given your discomfort with arachnids, I shall refrain from referencing sizable sea-creatures that I have encountered. I shall think of an alternative encounter.
Fenn: ::chuckling:: Yeah if I see a sea spider, I’m outta here just so you know.
Like all phobias the fear of arachnids was illogical; the Commander had been right about that. Maezel’s phobia stemmed from a spider bite she’d suffered when she was about five years old. It had been nothing serious, her skin had itched for a couple of days
but to five year old Maezel it had been the end of the world and she couldn’t stand being near them after that.
Sevo: Response
V'Lar: Indeed. In my early teenage years, I conducted several journeys into the Forge. On one such expedition, I journeyed deep into the Womb of Fire, descending into the ancient caves of the
Te-Vikram. To stand deep below the surface of my homeworld, witnessing the magma veins and sensing the infrasound of a geological network analogous to a planetary circulatory system...
V’Lar paused, seemingly remembering the moment she was describing.
V'Lar: I believe the experience meets the definition of remarkable. Do you concur?
Fenn: I do indeed, that sounds like an incredible thing to witness.
Sevo: Response
V'Lar drifted slightly downward and to the left, gesturing towards something she had spotted nearby. Intrigued by anything that could catch the attention of a Vulcan, Maezel swam over to see what she had discovered.
V'Lar: Regarding your earlier desire for a sample. Would such an object qualify? Given that the exoskeleton is composed of non-living calcium carbonate, even a low resolution scanner would be able to obtain sufficient data to allow the object to be reproduced
via a replicator with over 99% accuracy. Since the original is subject to decay but a replicator pattern is not, logic suggests it would serve as a superior memento. Would that satisfy the requirement for "bringing a piece back?"
Fenn: See Commander! You get it, this is perfect.
Sevo: Response
Maezel examined the exoskeleton visually. It definitely belonged to a creature she hadn’t seen before and if the remains were anything to go by, a picture or two would look great in her personal journal.
Fenn: Did anyone bring a scanner along?
V’Lar / Sevo: Response
Fenn: If so, could I borrow it please? If I can replicate this, it’ll look great on the shelf in my quarters.
