V'Lar: I have noticed. Evidently I will need to... acclimate

V'Lar considered that the Commander had been aboard the ship for the entirety of her Starfleet career. Her longevity suggested that she may be able to provide valuable insight.

V'Lar: Given your tenure, I would welcome any strategic data you have regarding how to successfully integrate into this environment.

Marshall: Accept the ship runs on controlled chaos with some handrails. ::She shrugged, smiling gently.:: When in doubt, observe, adapt, and remember most emotional outbursts can be resolved with either coffee, or five minutes in a quiet corridor. Also, don't fight the biscuits.

V'Lar observed the human lift the plate of biscuits to underscore her point.

oO My position on biscuits remains absolute. Oo

Marshall: Not the literal kind. The figurative. Plenty of people here will reach out to you, wanting to connect, offering biscuits of their own. Stories, feelings, bad jokes, depending on who you work with. The key to survival is taking one, even if you don't intend to eat it.

V'Lar: Thank you, Commander. ::Tilting her head in a slight bow:: I shall take that into consideration. Returning to my earlier offer, I shall send you materials relating to Vulcan meditation and exercise techniques. Please let me know if you would like instruction, should you ever wish to try replacing your "glaring" technique.

Marshall: I'll keep it in reserve. ::She raised her mug in a small salute.:: Maybe one day soon we'll have a mutual sharing of efforts. Sitting gives my brain too much room to organise a committee. Moving keeps it honest. Having a walk and talk session regularly might do us both some good.

V'Lar observed the 'salute', a casual human gesture of camaraderie. She found the Commander's reasoning regarding ambulatory meetings to be sound; kinetic activity was well-documented to stimulate cognitive flow, preventing the stagnation Marshall described even if, as a Vulcan, she was able to maintain efficiency for considerable amounts of time regardless of whether she was seated, standing or in motion.

V'Lar:
An agreeable proposition. Peripatetic meetings combine the sharing of information with cardiovascular activity. Whilst the literal biscuits offer questionable nutritional content, I note that the metaphorical biscuit in this scenario offers a number of health benefits, such as caloric expenditure and improved circulation.

Marshall: Oh, entirely. But it's also Bajoran oat based, high in protein. Dual purpose metaphors are the most dangerous kind.

V'Lar raised a brow. The Commander appeared to be extending her wordplay to suggest the metaphorical biscuits featured actual nutritional values.

V'Lar: It would seem I should add colourful metaphors to the list of things I must acclimate to.

Marshall: So, when you're not Chief Medical Officer, what do you get up to in your free time?

V'Lar paused, her brow furrowing ever so slightly at the Commander's phrasing. The premise of the inquiry contained a fundamental error.

V'Lar: Commander, your query is flawed. I am always the Chief Medical Officer. My function does not cease when a shift rotation concludes. Furthermore, I officially took my post aboard the Gorkon four days, eight hours, and thirty-nine minutes ago.

oO And twenty-four seconds. Oo

V'Lar: I have yet to be 'off duty'.

Marshall: Response

In the interest of completeness, she mentally catalogued the activities she typically pursued whilst not on shift. There was meditation, the review of current medical journals, writing and publishing her own papers and...

oO The... simulations. Oo

She hesitated, if only for a nanosecond. What had commenced as an entirely valid academic inquiry—a means to expand her scientific skills—had evolved into something... distinct. A pursuit that she knew her previous crew would not have tolerated, a private deviation that could have cost V'Lar her career.

V'Lar: I primarily use my 'free time' for meditation or expanding my scientific knowledge.

V'Lar was satisfied that she had been truthful, opting to give a response that was factually correct but concise enough to avoid sharing details that others would not understand.

Marshall: Response

She was acutely aware that her routine was not what most humans would consider to be 'fun'.

V'Lar: Indeed. And what about you, Commander? When you are not 'glaring' at environmental systems, or consuming snacks of questionable nutritional value, how do you utilise your off-duty hours?

Whilst not one for unnecessary social interactions, V'Lar felt it reasonable to ask a reciprocal question.

Marshall: Response
