((Vermillion Wastes, Gateside Dimension))

The plan was in motion. Valek was confident in his comrade's skills and the desired effect should be a positive outcome. However, with this unknown world and dimension, failure was still a possibility. Valek remained alert as the plan was executed.

Reynolds: Give yourself a healthy margin of error, Spelvan. There's no need to cut it close.

Spelvan: O-okay. Everything... Everything will be okay.

Valek: The plan is logical and likely to succeed. Unknown dimensional physics remain a significant variable.

The young Ensign was confident, but Valek detected a slight tremor in his voice as he finished. Valek was sure Spelvan would succeed. He had already shown how capable he was in tense situations, regardless of some of his emotions showing. Valek watched as Spelvan worked the timer on the device and moved to the location Valek's rifle had drilled, and dropped it into the hole. Then quickly sprinted toward Reynolds and Valek.

Spelvan: And now, I suppose, we wait.

Reynolds: And hope?

Valek: Indeed Ensign.

They stood in silence as they awaited the device's detonation and results that would follow. Valek and Spelvan both scanned the tree from top to bottom. There was a slight rumble beneath the ground, indicating detonation had ignited. Valek kept his eyes on the tree and surrounding areas.

At first there was nothing that changed, but then as he viewed the tree the vines started loosening its grasp around the tree, slightly changing color, the ground and surrounding grass also changed to a bluish hue, a large contrast from the orange-red that dominated this world.

Spelvan: Perhaps this is what dormancy passes for in this dimension.

Reynolds: ::Quietly,:: Or we've shifted the balance of power.

Valek: Indeed, Admiral. The possibilities are not mutually exclusive. Both may be valid simultaneously.

Both Reynolds and Spelvan were reviewing the latest scans on their tri-corders. As they reviewed the data, Valek moved toward the tree and kneeled down to get a closer look.

Spelvan: What are your scans showing, Admiral? The temperature at the center of the tree is now 4 degrees Celsius and dropping.

Reynolds: Much the same. ::She glanced toward him.:: Your bomb appears to have done exactly what we hoped for.

Valek: Interesting phenomenon the changes appear to be continuing, although its rate of propagation has decreased.

Spelvan: The EM resonance levels are also slowly dropping.

Reynolds: At much the same rate that patch of blue is expanding. ::She frowned.:: We need to find our way back. Somehow.

Valek: I concur. Do we have a viable return route to the gate?

Spelvan: Response

Reynolds: Let's try backtracking along those resonance traces before they disappear. It's the best we have.

Nodding Valek moved to take his place at point, and started backtracking the way they came. It was less difficult than getting here, as the random changing topography seemed to have stopped for now.

Valek: The topography appears stable at present. We should be able to make efficient progress on our return

Spelvan: Response

As the trio started to move on, Valek felt heavy pressure in his head, not unlike earlier. The pressure continued and he had to stop and blink his eyes, trying to clear the searing headache. He took deep breaths and closed his eyes, then he imagined opening small doors in his mind, to allow the pressure to enter his thoughts. In his mind's eye he could see the cloudy dream world again. And as before, a large humanoid shadow stood before him.

Entity: You have started....freedom....savior....the purge of evil has begun.

Valek: ::speaking through his thoughts:: Are these the same changes we observed?

Entity: Energy Sapling is free....the evil one has lost control...we are free....leave...be free

Before Valek could respond, his mind cleared and he stumbled.

Spelvan / Reynolds: Response

He stabilized himself and rubbed his temple with his free hand. Valek turned toward Spelvan and Reynolds. His voice was low, but his mind was clearing and the pressure was subsiding rapidly.

Valek: The entity contacted me again. It indicated that we have initiated a chain reaction. It appears the entity is now capable of opposing its adversary, which may account for the changes we are observing. I recommend we expedite our return to the gate and notify the other teams.

Spelvan / Reynolds: Response
