(( Songbird - Deck 9 - USS Gorkon ))
After a first lesson in the Vulcan martial arts Suus Mahna, Lachlan wanted to express his gratitude for an excellent lesson given by Spelvan and his partner in crime Maezel Fenn, by offering them refreshments. The trio ended up at Songbird where currently a Selkie stood behind the counter. He had opted for a table near the counter so he could easily get the drinks himself without having to bother the Selkie. Drinks were handed out, snacks, something named lorkk, were ordered and a brief explanation about the special music playing in the establishment was given.
Crauw: So you’re both Starfleet officers? I take it you’re expecting all kinds of adventures?
Fenn: Yes, I’m eager to see what the Beta quadrant has in store for us.
Spelvan: It will be your first mission. For Sickbay's sake and mine, please avoid mortal injury.
Somewhat amused Lachlan watched the Vulcan at the table for a moment. If the doctor wanted a quiet job with little casualties and little work he was in for a surprise. Though he agreed with the avoiding mortal injury part.
Fenn: And you Lachlan? What will you do as the Gorkon wades into the thick of it?
Crauw: I am here for the moral support of the crew, of course. And to hear all your exciting stories afterwards.
Spelvan looked at him as he responded.
Fenn: ::smiling:: You could join Starfleet you know and join us on missions.
A gentle laugh joined the Songbird’s music, he picked his glass at the edge and turned it around without drinking it.
Crauw: I’m perfectly happy where I am now. Seeing what is out there, without risking my life and avoiding a visit to Sickbay as the good doctor here has suggested.
With those last words, he nodded towards Spelvan.
Spelvan: Perhaps you have the best of both worlds, Lachlan - you see new locations with less direct action.
Lachlan could only agree with those words. Still, he had seen his piece of action, he’d been there when the ship was hiding and fighting against the Borg. Somehow he had survived a big blow to the head back on the Njörðr, mainly thanks to a burly Klingon. So even life for the civilians onboard the ship was not without any risk. The Selkie brought a basket filled with the lorrk that Maezel ordered earlier. The first one to attack the snack was Spelvan and Lachlan went in next. The snack was well seasoned, crispy and tasted for more. It was a perfect snack to serve with drinks.
Spelvan: Thank you for sharing this, Ensign Fenn. It is delicious.
Fenn: ::smiling:: I’m glad you like it; it’s one of my favourites.
Lachlan took another piece of lorrk and held it in his hand, turning the little snack as he raised it, pointing towards Fenn.
Crauw: If you don’t mind, I actually think I’ll put this on the snack menu in Songbird. It goes well with some of our drinks.
Spelvan: You mentioned before that this was one of the few Bolian foods that other humanoids can eat - why is that?
Lachlan popped the snack in his mouth, chewing it down, and took a sip of his drink while listening to Maezel’s explanation.
Fenn: Well, a number of Bolian dishes require the ingredients to degrade to the point that would make a lot of other species sick. To us, this adds flavour and changes the texture of the food and the bacteria involved in breaking down the ingredients don’t affect us. This is because the Bolian digestive system is highly acidic so the same bacteria that would give you and Lachlan food poisoning would be completely killed off in my digestive system.
Crauw: ::Looking at Spelvan.:: You’re coming with me if one day a Bolian invites me for lunch or dinner, my friend.
There was a twinkle in his eyes when he said the words. Lachlan looked somewhat surprised, was the Vulcan blushing?
Spelvan: I apologize for my forwardness. I have an interest in genetics - particularly evolutionary genetics.
Fenn: ::taking a bite of Lorrk and covering her mouth:: No need to apologise. I’m glad you said so actually. My specialty actually crosses over heavily with genetics so it’s an interest of mine too. If you need a consult for a project or something some time me then let me know.
Crauw: You see, it’s not only the missions that could be dangerous on a starship, if one’s not careful the food can be deadly too.
Spelvan: Response
Fenn: And if you just want to geek out over the latest discoveries, then feel free to contact me. Same for you Lachlan, I bet you’re hiding a genetics degree we don’t know about right?
Lachlan raised his hands, palms pointed towards his two new friends.
Crauw: The only degree I have is for mixing drinks, non-lethal drinks even. Some may contain a certain degree of alcohol but that is about it. ::He eyed Spelvan.:: And yes, I do know that can be lethal too.
Spelvan: Response
He took a sip of his own drink, noticing the empty glass on the table.
Crauw: Can I get anyone a refill?
Spelvan / Fenn: Response
Crauw: We have plenty of other drinks to choose from and if needed, and I know it’s no comparison with the Brew Continuum, but the replicator makes some good coffee and tea too. ::He smiled.:: Programmed with a special ingredient only known by me.
Spelvan / Fenn: Response
Crauw: You know another benefit as bartender? I hear all the great stories firsthand. So I expect both of you to do exactly the same thing. That makes me part of the adventure too.
He said the last with a wink and raised his glass before he took a drink.
