((Holodeck 8, Deck 9, USS-Gorkon))
Lachlan was more the passive type, preferring words over fighting. But as a civilian on the ship, he had learned that there weren’t always security officers around and that words would not always help him. Something he had learned only a while back when they were stranded in the Borg universe. Borg only seemed to pronounce three words: Resistance is futile.
And when he heard about a Vulcan course in suus mahna, granted he had to look up what suus mahna really was, he figured he’d give it a try. He didn’t want to end up on a course where he learned to stare into a flame for half a day. Together with the other eager students, he had joined in firing away harmless questions towards their tutor, a Vulcan who also was a medical doctor. Hopefully, they wouldn’t need his medical expertise after the course.
Crauw: Does suus mahna differ much from other martial arts? I suspect it is less violent than for instance Klingon martial arts?
He figured it would suit him more than learning mok’bara. Lachlan had never shown much interest in the lessons Toran Sevo gave in the Klingon martial arts. He wasn’t as muscled as Toran or Makkor for that matter.
Fenn: Response
Spelvan: Suus mahna places emphasis on evasive maneuvers and reading your enemy to end conflict swiftly. That is the main difference, I believe, between this and other martial arts.
Lachlan was intrigued already. Evasive maneuvers to avoid people hitting his face, that was always a plus. He rubbed the back of his neck. Dodging fists, he could do that.
Spelvan: It may then be said, therefore, that Vulcans do not start fights but they do finish them.
Lachlan looked at his fellow student, somewhat confused.
Crauw: Finish them? ::His gaze switched towards Spelvan.:: You don’t mean kill them, right?
Fenn: Response
There was a brief silence as the doctor figured out their next move.
Spelvan: Computer, generate a holographic copy of myself, without any martial art skills, wearing my Starfleet uniform. ::Pause:: Since you asked, I will demonstrate the nerve pinch on my double, so that you may see it done properly.
Lachlan crossed his arms in front of his chest, walking over to the back of the Vulcan’s double that appeared, making sure Fenn had a good view on the two men with their pointed ears. He had to admit, he was somewhat disappointed that as a non-Vulcan he could not learn the nerve pinch. And he certainly did not want to share his mind with someone else or vice-versa, in order to learn.
Crauw: That’s an excellent idea, my friend.
Fenn: Response
Spelvan: ::He positioned the hologram version of himself so that its back was facing the audience, grasping near its shoulder with an outstretched hand:: I apply pressure at the base of the neck with the tips of my fingers and - ::The hologram slumped and Spelvan lowered it to the ground:: the target becomes unconscious.
Lachlan jumped a step backwards as the holographic Vulcan slumped to the ground.
Crauw: Just like that, amazing, don’t you think, lady Fenn?
Fenn: Response
He stared at the motionless figure on the holodeck floor.
Crauw: Does it actually hurt?
Spelvan / Fenn: Response
It was a neat trick, of course, it wouldn’t help much if the opponent was on the other side of the street. He grinned as he looked towards the others. He had to ask.
Crauw: And does suus mahna help us dodge a nerve pinch? Or is it just a matter of never turning your back to the enemy?
Spelvan / Fenn: Response
