to USS Gorkon – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Science Lab 6, Deck 7, USS Gorkon))
Taelon continued his attempt to explain the tools arrayed on the counter.
Taelon: Um, ideally, I’d use this - ::He switched tools, picking up a very similar looking slim pen; but this one hand a chamber in the body filled with a tiny amount of liquid.:: It holds a fálmen, a ‘watcher’, that records nerve inputs over time. After a short amount of time, say, a month at least, we extract the watcher, and use its data to help pre-train an implant.
Finch: And then the information is extracted and fed onto a computer for analysis?
Taelon: Yes; it’s mostly watching for neuron activations, so the brain’s natural mapping can be used for the cybernetic connections.
Finch: Isn’t that remarkable. ::She chewed the inner corner of her mouth for a moment.:: And you’ve obviously gone through the process yourself? You’re the proof that’s in the pudding?
Taelon: The - ::He paused. Not for the first or last time did people assume this was new. And it was, in a matter of speaking. It hadn’t been meant for humans, after all.:: I, um, yes, I have.
Finch: You didn’t perform it on yourself, did you, love? ::She moved around to his other side, and blinked at some of the other tools on the table, thoughtfully.:: Then again, is that really a question I ought to ask someone cybernetically linked to an android companion?
Taelon: I - well, yes, I did. Is that … bad?
He looked at her with his big blue eyes, searching her face for incrimination or disapproval.
Finch: Response
Taelon: It was…easier. I know what to do, and people are scared of these, for some reason. I mean - if the Borg were the first encounter with the concept, I think I understand, but…
He was trailing off, still holding the tool.
Finch: Response
Taelon: Oh, well, it’s not…new. Not really. Before the Borg, my parents’ generation and many before were - are, I guess - very cybernetically modified. It was normal. But it’s all - it was intended for Eccians - um, El-Aurians, I mean. I’ve been trying to adapt it to wider use, since - otherwise, it was kind of all for nothing, you know…?
