(( Floating Island - Rogue Planet ))

She left one of their own behind. A decision made between her and Bryce, even after her suggestion they’d carry him. Deep down, she had followed Bryce’s reasoning that they’d move faster with just the three of them. What would they do if they had to cross another boulder bridge? Jumping from one rock to another while carrying someone on your back was too high of a risk. Even the encouraging words from Cory, that he once had been in a similar situation, didn’t make her feel any better. She knew his location, he had his combadge and Cory even gave the medic a transporter tag. The only thing they could do right now was to hurry and fix that veil wherever it was hiding.

They continued their way through the red forest with its tall trees and dense shrubbery. Not wanting to alarm the others, doubt filled Samira’s mind. What if they did not return to the same time zone to save Bryce? And did those chroniton particles have some effect on them? All questions she didn’t have an answer to. Vylaa had mentioned the hostile people on this island, but they were in that bubble in the past. So far, they hadn’t encountered anyone on this island in their current time zone. Or maybe they hid and kept an eye on the three strangers, travelling their lands.

A while later, a glimpse of the tall sand-colored buildings showed between the tree trunks. As they continued, Samira figured it wouldn’t be a bad idea to climb one of them to see what was ahead of them and compare it with what was on the map. They reached the edge of the treeline. The ruins right in front of them. She pointed to the building a bit further to the left. The rubble from the building beside it, would give them a few good steps to reach the top floor.

Neathler: That one looks easier to climb.

Cory nodded.

Stoyer:  Yeah, Commander.  As long as nothing shifts, we should be able to reach the top.

zh’Tisav: I think it will hold up fine. Look at the plants that are holding it together. ::She indicated red grasses that had taken a foot hold in the rubble pile, lacing their roots deep into the slope, lacing it together.:: It should be pretty solid.

Samira agreed and they approached the building with caution. No-one came to greet them. The buildings seemed abandoned. Although none of them possessed x-ray eyes that could see if there were people hiding inside. Samira did not really rely on her tricorder readings anymore. They reached the base of the building.

Stoyer:  We made it this far.

The Andorian craned her neck back to look at the building. Samira did the same. The ever present blue clouds still blocking their view of the stars or the system behind it.

zh’Tisav: Quite a different building style than on the other island. Maybe… A different nation-state? Or clan? That would explain the different reaction to our presence.

Neathler: Or they wanted something else, stronger after the original destruction of the buildings.

Stoyer:  It looks like a good place to take a look.

Vylaa kicked at one of the stones, which didn’t appear to move. The block of stones looked large and almost equal, definitely not natural formed. Samira studied them for a moment, assessing which route to take that would lead them to the top of the building.

zh’Tisav: Steep, but climbable. If we zig-zag it shouldn’t be as hard.

Neathler: Not for you tall people.

She jumped on the first stone. Nothing moved or shifted. That was a good sign. She climbed on the next. Taking Vylaa’s suggestion, she moved in a zig-zag line as they climbed further and further. Things went rather easy, especially compared with the boulder bridge they had crossed earlier.

zh’Tisav: ::Off-handedly.:: I wonder where they all went…

Vylaa’s words made her stop, and she looked around. The view was rather amazing as she gazed over the red tree-tops. The trees gently swaying, as if they waved to them. Or encouraged them.

Neathler: Maybe they all moved to other islands. Knowing these buildings were not salvable? Why live in ruins if you can build yourself a new city?

Stoyer: Response

zh’Tisav: Well, I mean, it’s a big place. People don’t just disappear. Did they die? ::Vylaa started to climb again, and Samira also turned and continued her own climb.:: No insects, no animals of any kind, and no people, except in the past. Maybe it’s just my Andorian nature, but it’s making me nervous. ::She looked past her companions to the top.:: Let’s just find that lake...

Neathler: On it, sir.

She grinned as she took a next step, but her foot slipped. In a reflex, she put all her weight on her other foot, and grabbed the next block, pulling herself up. The next few moments, she climbed in silence, not wanting to slide down involuntarily because she was not paying attention.

Stoyer: Response

Samira finally reached the roof of the building, and she wiped her hands on her trousers. Turning around, she looked at the others. Vylaa had stopped climbing, staring at a certain point in the trees as if there was something there.

Neathler: Is something out there, Vylaa?

Stoyer / zh’Tisav: Response

She reached for her tricorder, and performed a quick scan. Nothing out there. It was as dead as… she turned around. There it was. The dead island that crumbled into the yellow ocean below them. Seeing it from up here, she noticed the difference. Unlike this island, the one crumbling lacked any plantlife. She didn’t spot a single red trace of the plantlife. Finally, both Cory and Vylaa stood next to her.

Neathler: One would think it’s the plants that keep these islands alive. ::She turned to the other two.:: I take it none of you are botanists?

They had a ship filled with people who tended to plants as their job or as a hobby, and now she had a question about plants, none of them was around.

Stoyer / zh’Tisav: Response

The three of them walked to the edge of the roof. Something had changed, but Samira couldn’t immediately figure out what it was as a crater filled with yellow water caught her attention. The sand colored buildings forming an artificial circle around the crater. A sound filled her ears when she finally realized what had changed. The buildings no longer were in ruins. The sound of an approaching shuttle made her duck as it flew over their heads. She covered her ears as the vessel fired on one of the buildings across the lake. Stones and rocks tumbling down as the shuttle made a direct hit. Her eyes spotting the Cardassian origin of the shuttle. They must have crossed another fissure.

Stoyer / zh’Tisav: Response
