OOC: Takes place before "Temporary Comfort"
((Holodeck 3, USS Gorkon))
Rosek: ::to Fabio:: “Bailando”?
Fabio: ::grins:: Si, senorita. Excellent choice.
Rosek: ::to computer:: Computer, cue “Bailando”.
::As Brandon had, Fabio tapped his foot a few times to count them off. Her feet barely touched the ground as they twirled and spun, her hips moving back and forth to the beat. He turned her back to his front and she raised her arms above her head to join with his as her hips continued to swivel. Their hands glided downward until his rested on her hips with hers on top. He then turned her outward and back in, his hands going to her hips as their pelvises ground together. Within a couple more minutes, the song had ended.::
Rosek: Computer, freeze program. ::to Chythar:: ::smirks:: What do you think? Can you see you and Alex doing that?
::CD blinked a few times in surprise as he watched, his mind trying to wrap around the concept of what he had just witnessed and envisioned Alex on the dance floor. It took him a few moments to find his tongue once the program stopped.::
Skyfire: Not sure. ::He paused.:: That was the basics?
Rosek: A little more complicated than basics, but they’re some of the more common moves. I admit Fabio is a bit of a show off.
Skyfire: OK. Basics again, this time without Fabio.
Rosek: Let’s get a bit of factual background first. You seem to do better when you know the history. All music has a number of beats per measure...3, 4, and 6 are the most common. Salsa is 4. Steps are broken down into two measures of 4 each, so 8 counts total. Beginners like a slower beat with more accentuated percussion. I’ll play the music and you clap out the beats with me so you can get an idea. ::to Computer:: Play “Yamuleamau”.
::As the music started, she began clapping, going to 8 then pausing before starting again. CD followed along as she clapped out the beats, and managed to goof the first time. After the third repetition, he got better.::
Rosek: ::nods:: Good. Now, we’re going to clap on the beats where we step and pause where we don’t. So ::claps the beat as she speaks:: Clap, clap, clap, pause...clap, clap, clap, pause…
::CD nodded and tried moving his feet on the claps, standing still when he was at a pause point. Purely an experiment in timing, but one he felt was necessary for his understanding of the salsa.::
Skyfire: Ah think Ah’m gettin’ the hang of this...
Rosek: Okay. Next. ::to Computer:: Beginner’s course, phase two. ::numbers appeared on the floor in front of her:: Okay so number 1… ::stands there:: Is starting position. ::steps forward to number 2:: Left foot forward and slide together. ::steps backward to number 3:: Right foot back and slide together. ::steps back to number 4:: Left foot back and slide together. ::steps forward to number 1:: then back to starting position. Alternate which foot you use with each complete step.
::She repeated the steps a couple more times before adding a slight swivel to her hips and clapping along, pausing in the appropriate places. Chythar followed suit as best as he was able, his typical klutziness for the first few go-arounds until he settled into the groove.::
Rosek: Shift your weight back or forward with each step. Keep your weight on the front or ball of your foot when you step back.
Skyfire: Right. ::He followed her directions to the letter as he got the hang of it. By the fourth repetition, he was doing better.::
Rosek: On the fourth step, rock back then forward on your left foot on the pause before stepping forward to starting position again with your right.
::He nodded and continued the pattern, trying to duplicate the movements with a few variations as he got into the groove.::
Skyfire: This is harder than Ah figured…
Rosek: ::shrugs:: You’re doing fine. Maybe try watching me.
::She demonstrated the steps at a slower pace. He nodded faintly and watched her for a few moments before following suit. He picked up on it about the same speed: with a few mistakes at first before getting it down.::
Rosek: Want to try it with some music?
Skyfire: Is that wise?
Rosek: ::grins and shrugs:: Best way to learn is to do it.
Skyfire: Right. ::sagely nod.:: Learn from the master. OK, music. Let’s give it a try.
Rosek: Just stay with me as I count. When I step back, you step forward and vice versa. ::to Computer:: Play “Yamulemau”.
::The music started and she counted them off.::
Rosek: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8….
::She stepped back, and he stepped forward. For the first four, he was watching her feet. For the second four, he was watching her eyes..::
Rosek: Lean into me when you step forward and push forward with your left hand.
::He did as instructed, and kept it simple so he could learn the basic pattern. He’d try more variants with practice, he decided. He’d done enough experimentation for one day.::
Rosek: ::nods:: Good. Keep going.
::As per his usual learning speed, he managed to keep up the basic steps without any variance for a few measures before she asked the next question.::
Rosek: Ready for a turn?
Skyfire: Guess so.
::While it didn’t feel like it was doing wonders for his confidence, it did help broaden his musical horizons. He extended his arm to her and attempted a turn without much flourish, just something basic.::
Rosek: ::laughs, but goes with it:: Not quite what I meant. That’s more of a spin, I think. Follow me. ::starts them again:: 1, 2, 3, 4...turn ::leads the turn:: 6, 7, 8...1, 2, 3, 4...5, 6, 7, 8… Got it?
::He shrugged and followed her lead. He raised an eyebrow and tried to get into it.::
Rosek: Stop worrying so much. Follow the music and your instincts.
::Another nod, this one accompanied by a breath as he refocused his energy. He took another moment or two to center himself before continuing. Again with his same learning pattern: botch three, learn the fourth and onward.::
Rosek: Now move your hips a bit to the beat...that’s it.
::He nodded again and followed along.::
Rosek: Brave enough to try that last move you saw me and Fabio doing?
Skyfire: Sure…?
Rosek: When I say, spin me to the left. Our arms will cross and you’ll hold my left with your right and vice versa.
::He nodded again and followed her lead, letting his muscles relax a bit as he listened to the music.::
Rosek: Okay...spin.
::The transition wasn’t without its bumps. He managed to goof on the footing for the spin the first time because he was off the beat.::
Rosek: Try again.
::The second time, he did better but it was still a bit rough. He shook his head and backed up, attempting to refocus his energy.::
Skyfire: Ah’ll get it right eventually...third time’s a charm, right?
Rosek: ::grins:: Just go with the beat. Let it guide you. Let’s start from the top and see if that helps.
Skyfire: ::nodded in agreement.:: Might help.
::She counted them off and took him through the basic steps, then the turn.::
Rosek: Now the spin...after the next 8 count…
::He nodded and managed to pull it off smoothly without screwing it up this time, as per his steep learning curve. He was fairly quiet as he went through the motions, and listened to the music::
::On the next spin, Lael raised her hands above her head as she’d done with Fabio and joined them with Chythar’s, guiding them slowly down until they fell on her hips, grinding back a bit into the curve of his hips. Again, he was silent. He was learning quickly, and wasn’t sure he’d ever use this stuff again.::
Rosek: Computer, pause music.
::She turned, breathing heavily, and laid a hand over his heart, smiling.::
Rosek: That was great. You really are a fast learner.
Skyfire: Thanks. Let’s hope if Ah ever use this stuff with Alex that Ah don’t embarrass myself.
Rosek: ::laughs:: Alex won’t know what hit him.
Skyfire: Maybe it’ll be the tequila. ::chuckled.::
Rosek: Just remember...salsa is a dance of seduction. Go with your instincts. Don’t be afraid to get physically close to him.
::He nodded faintly and smiled.::
Skyfire: Ah think that’s all Ah can handle for now. Small beagle needs his dinner.
Rosek: ::nods:: I’ll warn you though...maybe wait until your relationship isn’t as new for this one. Like I said, it’s a seductive dance and is usually foreplay for a sexual encounter.
Skyfire: Noted. It’s still a bit early for me to seduce him…
Rosek: Take all the time you need. ::motions to the program:: This is available whenever you need it. You can practice with a male or female partner...your choice. Numbers 1-3 are beginner, and 4-6 are somewhat advanced. I typically practice with number 7.
::CD nodded and asked casually.::
Skyfire: Level 7 is dancing with the stars level?
Rosek: ::pauses:: Pretty close, yeah. Depends on your partner and how in tune you are with them. ::grins impishly:: Together, Jansen and I are more number 8.
::No way he could be surprised by that statistic. He knew that anyone with enough practice and being one with your partner on the dance floor could get that good, and there wasn’t really a level for that except music.::
Rosek: I’m going to go clean up. I’m meeting Jansen for dinner. Tell Devlin I said hello.
Skyfire: Will do.
::Lael then exited the holodeck, headed for her quarters.::
