((Infirmary, Gibaria Outpost))

The situation in the adjacent laboratory was deteriorating at a quantifiable rate. Scans indicated the extradimensional xenoflora held behind the containment field was rapidly accumulating energy, a volatile variable that had prompted Commander Tahna to mandate immediate inoculations for the away team. Having already administered her own dose and successfully compartmentalised the resulting neurological paraesthesia, V'Lar returned her focus to preparing for the rapid extraction of patients before a catastrophic containment failure could occur.

V'Lar updated her calculations, while the first patient she would be transferring to the Gorkon was nearly ready for transport, the others would take more time.

V’Lar:  =/\= It will still take some time to prepare the patients for transport. It should be noted that those that are not viable for transfer can not be safely moved. What are your orders? =/\=

Separated by the laboratory bulkhead, V'Lar could not physically observe the actions of her colleagues, but the open comm channel transmitted the distinct, rapid chirping of a standard-issue Starfleet tricorder completing a scan.

Tahna: =/\= Prepare the patients for transport. Those that won’t survive…we’ll just have to keep them comfortable. I think anyone inoculated should be able to survive what the moss throws at us, if the force field fails. =/\=

V'Lar had already separated the patients according to their mathematical viability, her approach aligning perfectly with strict triage protocols. It was a stark, mathematical necessity to preserve efficiency.

For those with a zero percent probability of survival, V'Lar knew that palliative care was the only available course. However, her primary concern for the terminal patients had shifted to the infirmary being breached. She had theorised that the radiation emitted by the extradimensional xenoflora functioned as a mechanism of pre-digestion. Should the infirmary's perimeter fail and the predatory flora find a way in to access their food source, the results would be distasteful.

The prevalence of vegans and vegetarians in Vulcan culture was such that many outsiders actually believed V'Lar's people were obligate herbivores. She noted the biological inversion that, as a member of a species known for its plant-based diet, she was now having to contend with predatory plants that consumed animals.

oO As plants are living organisms, herbivores and carnivores do both feed on death. Oo

Pace: =/\= Aye, sir. =/\=

V’Lar:
=/\= Understood, Commander. I will continue to prioritise the immediate evacuation of viable patients. Given that the work is both delicate and time sensitive, additional specialist resource would be beneficial. =/\=

V'Lar's hands had not stopped moving as she prepared the four viable candidates for transport. Even with immediate transfer to the Gorkon, she calculated their survival probabilities remained marginal. Furthermore, should they defy those vast statistical odds, their subsequent quality of life would be severely compromised given the considerable physical and neurological damage they had already sustained.

Tahna: =/\= I’ll see if we can get some relief staff from the Gorkon, trade them out for the civilian medics. =/\=

V'Lar found the proposal to be agreeable. V'Lar's Starfleet medical personnel would provide a far higher standard of operational efficiency than relying on the physically exhausted and mentally traumatised civilian staff that V'Lar had sent to recover.

V’Lar: =/\= That would be highly optimal. =/\=

For the briefest of moments, V'Lar considered requesting Ensign Spelvan be assigned to assist her. She had no concerns about his professionalism or his competence but did question whether his atypical Vulcan mindset might be problematic.

oO Ruthless efficiency is required more than empathy. Oo

She internally debated whether she was constructing a logical rationalisation to spare her colleague from the trauma of such a visceral mass-casualty environment, or if she simply wished to avoid his judgement regarding her own ruthless clinical detachment.

Pace: =/\= How’s the temperature in there, Doctor? Has it risen any higher? =/\=

She had not perceived any further shift in temperature, but before answering the Elaysian, V'Lar lowered her gaze to her tricorder to verify the data. Given the chaotic nature of the environment, it was statistically possible, though highly improbable, that she had failed to detect a subtle environmental fluctuation.

V’Lar: =/\= I register no further escalation at this exact moment, Lieutenant. =/\=

Tahna: Response

Pace: =/\= Would you like me to juice the forcefield, Commander? As a precaution? =/\=

The Elaysian’s colloquial use of the word 'juice' to describe the complex rerouting of power was linguistically inefficient. However, the underlying logic of reinforcing a stressed containment barrier was structurally sound, so V'Lar chose not to address it.

Tahna: Response

V’Lar: =/\= As a point of caution, given the compromised nature of the outpost, it will be neccessary to ensure there is no power interruption to the infirmary. =/\=

Pace/TahnaResponse

V’Lar: =/\= If your efforts to reinforce the containment field prove insufficient, is there a wider risk of containment failure? =/\=

Pace/TahnaResponse

Although rescue teams and survivors were dispersed throughout the outpost, V'Lar mentally calculated the total biomass of their immediate vicinity. Between the Starfleet personnel, the remaining civilian medical staff, the densely packed ward of heavily irradiated patients, and the accumulated deceased, their current location represented the facility's most significant concentration of organic material. If the medical laboratory and infirmary were compromised, they would all be on the menu.

V’Lar: =/\= If the flora is indeed predatory and utilising radiation as a pre-digestion mechanism, it will logically seek the densest concentration of consumable biological matter, I believe that would be this section. =/\=
