(( Observation Bay, near Engineering Annex, Gibaria Outpost ))

Up until moments ago, the officers had managed what could only be described as a miracle considering the current state of Gibaria outpost – they'd found a few minutes of peace and quiet. This hadn’t lasted though and their quiet time had been rudely interrupted by a particularly aggressive species of fauna. Having decided that discretion was the better part of valour, they’d locked themselves in the shuttle while the creature circled them like a carrion bird.

Fenn: That thing seems to be making itself at home.

Kovar / Marshall: Response

While Commander Marshall and Kovar discussed the situation, Maezel’s mind was running scenario after scenario trying to think of a way out of their current predicament. She sat in the pilot’s seat, spinning around in the chair as she thought. She’d already decided against using the shuttle’s weapons lest she took out half the outpost in the process. As she made her third pass of the navigation console, she froze momentarily as an idea came to her.

Fenn: Commander, Kovar, sorry to interrupt but I have an idea!

Maezel took a second to confirm that the idea was viable before continuing. She quickly accessed the directory of systems the engineers and scientists had seen fit to keep active and was pleased to see the navigational deflector was still online.

oO The deflector uses high powered deflector beams to protect the shuttle at speed but if it could be modified to emit a sound frequency instead... Oo

Fenn: Back home, my family uses these sonic devices to repel aggressive animals from our mining equipment. They emit a high frequency sound that creatures with a heightened sense of hearing cannot stand. That thing out there looks like a predator to me and I’m guessing it has the hearing of a hunter species too.

Kovar / Marshall: Response

Maezel took another moment to prepare the frequency to be emitted as a constant pulse which she was confident would force the creature to leave them alone. Moments later, with help from Kovar, came the moment of truth. Maezel looked to Commander Marshall.

Fenn: It’s ready, Commander. Kovar, you might want to cover those Vulcan ears.

Kovar / Marshall: Response

With the order given, Maezel activated the sonic pulse. To her relief, the effect was immediate. The creature let out a series of pained whimpers and snarls, swiping at thin air as it slowly backed away from the shuttle. Maezel increased power to the pulse and with a final, ear splitting screech the creature turned and fled, exiting the observation bay at speed.

Fenn: ::turning off the pulse:: Kovar, are you ok? I hope that wasn’t too uncomfortable for you?

Kovar / Marshall: Response
