((Sershia Market, Deluvia IV))

Dr. Spelvan had met up by chance with the chief engineer on their way to Sershia Market on shore leave and were currently looking at art for sale in the bountiful market.

Spelvan: Do you have anyone close to you who you are searching for a souvenir for?

Finch: An endless list of friends, and brothers, and their partners, and my nieces and nephews, and so on and so forth. ::She chuckled.:: There’s no particular plan here. If I see something that I think they’ll like, I’ll pick it up.

Spelvan nodded. He was familiar with many cultures who boasted large family systems - Denobulans, Bolians, and humans among them. Vulcan families, as they were, tended to be much smaller and formal, often with arranged marriages.

Spelvan: I am sure that is a way to ensure they will enjoy their gifts.

Finch: Now I know you didn’t come here to be interrogated by an older woman, but you’ve got to tell me more about this brother of yours. What’s his name?

The older woman was looking at a painting of a pointed bird on a yellow canvas - the surface was strangely rough. Spelvan touched it and instantly knew what technique had been used.

Spelvan: It has been treated with powdered pumice. A fascinating approach. ::He turned to Doz:: My brother's name is Jakk.

Further confirmation from the artist confirmed Spelvan's theory. He browsed the art pieces himself, settling on a muted piece with oranges, browns and yellows - reminiscent of the Vulcan desert landscape.

Finch: What a lovely name. Is he your only sibling or are you like me, and practically from a clutch?

Spelvan: I have several other siblings, but Jakk is the eldest. He is twelve years older than me.

His brother, in fact, had left Vulcan while Spelvan was still a small child - only reconnecting when the younger Vulcan was a teenager.

The two of them made their purchases and continued their way through the throng of the crowd at the market. The Vulcan idly wondered how many people visiting the shops and stalls lived here, and how many were tourists passing through, like himself and Doz.

Spelvan: Individuals like my brother are treated with extreme distrust on Vulcan. A rejection of logic is believed to lead to madness and chaos. Though such is not true with him.

Finch: Response

Spelvan was glad to be able to speak so lightly of his brother - that Jakk's status as V'tosh ka'tur was seen as a source of curiosity rather than one of deep shame. Later, Spelvan would be thankful that he had had this conversation with Roz before his disastrous exchange with V'Lar on the topic.

Spelvan: His rejection of logic was rooted in the desire to participate in systems of wealth and finance. Therefore, he settled on Ferengi and started an accounting firm.

Finch: Response

Subsequently, his brother was fond of gambling and casinos - though he was, as he often reminded Spelvan, "smart about it."

The pair came upon a stall selling small animals - mostly amphibians and reptiles of various shapes and sizes. Spelvan had considered getting a pet now he was out of the Academy and settled on the Gorkon - but had not yet decided what would be the most logical choice.

He came across a tank with two large snails, each about the size of his fist. One was bluish-green and the other was a more yellow-green color. He began studying them with interest, watching them move slowly within their generous enclosure.

Spelvan: These are Rigelian snails. Their shells change color according to mood and environment.

Finch: Response
