Spelvan: Projecting one's voice is a useful distraction skill should you be, as one might say, "against a wall."
Crauw: It's a good distraction technique and with some luck it'll give us an opportunity to hide or call for help somehow.
Fenn: I’m guessing this isn’t something we can master in one class, right?
Spelvan: No, but it is not a difficult skill to master. It simply takes time and patience.
Fenn: If it’s not a Suus Mahna technique, where did you learn it from Spelvan?
The Vulcan hesitated. He did not necessarily wish to invite many questions from the inquisitive Bolian about his rather unconventional upbringing as part of a group of folk musicians and actors. When one was acting in a play with a limited cast, throwing one's voice was crucial.
Spelvan: I learned it in my childhood. As part of the family... business. They are folk art performers.
Crauw: So you need an item that reflects sound?
Spelvan: ::He shook his head:: I merely manipulated my mouth, throat and lungs to make it seem as if my voice was coming from further away. I directed my visual attention at the vase, to make it seem that it was coming from that area specifically.
Fenn: Response
Crauw: How about some moves when someone is sneaking up on us from behind?
Spelvan: ::He raised an eyebrow:: Do you mean if you are grappled or held from behind?
Fenn: Response
The human seemed pleased with his question.
Crauw: And don’t tell me running away is the best option.
Spelvan: If someone has held you from behind, running away is going to be difficult.
Fenn: Response
Spelvan had a flash-back to their recent mission on the Klingon colony, when one of the Klingons had lifted him and he'd fallen on his wrist. If he had been able to center himself and recall these lessons, that situation may have been avoided.
Then again, the Vulcan had never had to put his martial arts into action with alarms blaring and phaser fire blasting all around him before, so perhaps he could be forgiven.
Spelvan: Like front blocks, getting free when attacked from behind is about maximizing leverage and turning the tables on your opponent.
Fenn/Crauw: Response
Spelvan: ::He turned so that his back was facing the Bolian and human.:: Mr. Crauw, if you would like, you can attempt to grip me and I will show you what I mean. Or, if you fear hurting me, Ensign Fenn can try.
Fenn/Crauw: Response
