What was love, if not a little bit of madness? Sometimes it was intoxicating in its joy, other times it was a soul-rending burden one couldn't shed. But it definitely had a tendency to avoid all logic and reason, the heart dragging the head into places it knew was unwise. She thought of all the years she'd spent apart from Rix, all the unanswered questions that had plagued her in the quiet and lonely dark, and she hated the idea of Doz experiencing something similar.
Kairis: I don't think it would be a waste, even if it doesn't turn out the way you hope. You'd know, instead of always wondering what might have been.
Finch: You’re right. But then how would we do it?
Kairis: We could charter a ship, or perhaps the Admiral would let us use one of the runabouts. ::She paused, and smiled a little sheepishly.:: If you want me to come along. I understand if there's someone else you're closer to, or if you'd rather do it alone.
Doz smiled and gave her a little nod, and Thea exhaled a soft sigh coloured with relief. She knew she was invested in her friend's endeavour, but she hadn't realised she'd felt so uncertain about how welcome she was within it. Despite her best efforts at restraint, Thea beamed back as Doz continued.
Finch: I couldn’t think of a better person to go there with. I really mean that, love. ::She tapped the coffee table.:: From a Jefferies tube to Ashmeransa, you’ve been with me through all of this, and you've been very gracious with your time.
Kairis: We're friends, and that's important to me. ::She smiled.:: I'm more than happy to help you where I can.
Finch: At least I’ll have someone to keep me company if it all goes sideways. A person to explore the city with. It looks terrific, doesn’t it? Rich with history.
Kairis: It does. Whatever happens there, we'll make the best of it.
Finch: A place that old, I’ll bet they’ve got all sorts of wonderful stories worth digging up. ::She smiled thinking of Thea’s telling of Aione and Thatius, then sipped her tea.:: How are things with Rix?
Kairis: Oh!
She exhaled her surprise in a soft laugh. The question was unexpected, although it really should not have been. They'd both shared the joys and troubles of their love lives before, wounded hearts, regrets of the past, hopes and fears for the future. Doz was one of the few people Thea trusted with her inner world, and she valued the other woman's insight and opinion.
Kairis: He gave me a bracelet when we were on Palanon. ::She pulled back her sleeve cuff, and a simple string of leather encircled her wrist, a thumb-smoothed kareiwood bead strung on it.:: It's Bajoran, a courtship bead. Apparently, it's supposed to convey intention.
Finch: Response
A faint blush caught on her cheeks, and she rolled the bead between her fingers. She wore the bracelet most days, only leaving it behind in her quarters if she thought she was leaving for a situation where she could lose it. It was worth more to her than any of the gilded jewels of her heritage.
Kairis: Rix isn't usually one for Bajoran tradition. ::She smiled slightly.:: It's something we both have in common. We don't really... fit... in the boxes we're supposed to.
Finch: Response
She sat in silence for a few moments. Talking about her family was something she hardly ever did, even with Rix. She hadn't mentioned the confrontation in her lodge to him, and enough time had passed that she wasn't sure how to bring it up now. Or even if she should. Exhaling a gentle sigh, she shared a weight she'd been carrying since their last stay on Palanon.
Kairis: My family is determined I'm going to marry... I suppose you'd call him a duke. ::She paused, shaking her head, her eyes wandering back down to the bracelet.:: We've known each other since we were children, he's perfectly pleasant, and I am not at all interested. But they are very fixed in their belief that I don't know what I want or what's best for me, and sooner or later, I'll agree with them.
