V'Lar did not immediately turn at the sound of the door parting. Her peripheral vision had already registered the Ensign's presence and, more critically, the trajectory of his gaze. He was observing the diagram of the Vulcan brain that she had on the display. The diagram included the theoretical severance points of the corpus callosum—a method for surgically separating the left and right hemispheres. To those not familiar with her theories, the data might appear to be evidence of damage; to V'Lar, it was a schematic for optimisation.

Spelvan: Doctor, I wish to discuss our conversation at N'Vea Hospitals.

For a moment V'Lar paused; she had anticipated such a request. She tapped a command into the console, closing the file she was working on before pivoting to face him.

V'Lar: Proceed.

Spelvan: I would like to apologize for my outburst. I had a... friend during my time at the Academy who ceased contact when he found out about my brother. I did not wish to repeat the experience.

V'Lar processed the admission that his previous erratic behaviour was not merely a momentary lapse, but was linked to a not dissimilar experience from his past.

oO He acted on a probability model derived from a sample size of one. Oo

She had expected better from him, both as a doctor and as a Vulcan. However, articulating that disappointment would serve no logical purpose.

V'Lar: You projected the behaviour of a previous associate onto me.

She spoke calmly, her tone devoid of accusation, simply stating the error as a matter of record.

Spelvan: It was illogical of me to assume that you would proceed in the same way, were you to learn the information as he did.

Ironically, his assumption that she would disapprove was not entirely incorrect— the V'tosh ka'tur had failed the teachings of Surak; however, as a medical doctor, V'Lar accepted that they were unwell and required treatment.

V'Lar: Indeed.

V'Lar was satisfied that her colleague had understood his error and, in admitting to it, had acted reasonably to address it.

V'Lar:  I accept your explanation. ::Gesturing for Spelvan to sit:: How is your literary knowledge, Ensign?

She gave her colleague a moment before taking a seat herself. Whilst she often preferred to stand, she was mindful that a relaxed posture was often beneficial to putting others at ease.

Spelvan: Response

V'Lar: Do you know the difference between an error and a mistake, Ensign? Anyone can make an error, Ensign. But that error doesn't become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.

Spelvan: Response

V'Lar: It is a quotation from a military leader of an ancient empire. Acknowledgement of an error is the first step towards correction, but you must learn from it. You must not allow a momentary lapse to form a detrimental pattern.

V'Lar paused, allowing her subordinate to consider the lesson. It was concerning that a Vulcan had allowed their fear of a potential—although admittedly likely—outcome to manifest as it had. For his sake, she wanted him to learn from the experience.

V'Lar: On the subject of the V'tosh ka'tur, we have a difference of opinion. I find it unlikely we will resolve that, but it need not impact our professional relationship.

Spelvan: Response
