((Medical Laboratory, Gibaria Outpost))
Tahna Meru supposed they were fortunate the dimensional bleed hadn’t made it as far as the outpost’s medical facilities yet. That didn’t mean this area was untouched by chaos: cries of pain and fear echoed from the treatment area, an audible sign of the dangers of prolonged exposure to the other dimension. The outpost had only a few doctors (they’d never anticipated such a great need), and moreover, no one had any idea how to treat the problems they were seeing.
Compared to the treatment area, the medical laboratory beside it seemed relatively peaceful. Meru was sure it wouldn’t stay that way for long.
The Bajoran skimmed over a PADD loaded with information from one of the outpost’s doctors. One press of a key and the information was available to Doctor V’Lar and Lieutenant Pace as well—everything they knew so far about the symptoms exposure to the dimensional bleed was causing. Some symptoms were similar to radiation poisoning, but there was more, too. Physical pain, mental distress that made it difficult for the patients to communicate. And the people who’d gotten the closest to the gate and lived to tell the tale were…it was like some of their limbs had started melting.
Tahna: We need both an inoculant and a treatment, or an inoculant that can treat folks who are already symptomatic.
V’Lar / Pace: Response
Meru glanced at her team. A Vulcan doctor who had previously worked on identifying environmental contagions, a scientist with a cell biology specialty, and Meru’s own xenobiology specialty. It was a good team, an excellent team. If anyone could solve this, she was certain it was the people she stood here with.
Tahna: There’s high levels of radiation, but everyone was treated for that, so there’s something else about the dimensional bleed that is causing their symptoms.
V’Lar / Pace: Response
Tahna: Doctor V’Lar, look over the medical records on hand, see if there’s anything existing that we can still try to alleviate the symptoms of the people already exposed. Lieutenant Pace, you’ve got scans and cell samples from the patients, see what anomalies you can find that will help us. I’ll work on determining what exactly from the dimensional bleed is causing these symptoms.
