Lachlan Crauw - Food and games

Lachlan nodded. It wasn’t the first time he thought he had the best position on the whole ship. He heard the stories first hand, without having to endure the suffering, running and surviving some of the crew members sometimes went through. He’d seen enough when he had boarded the USS Njörðr. That wasn’t exactly true, he hadn’t seen a thing. One bump on the head was enough to knock him out cold for the rest of the trip. The whole adventure was just a big blur in his mind. But now he was having something to eat with Vesela Pace and Jakk.
Crauw: One can only try, my friend Jakk. Do you have a few tricks, a few pointers upon your sleeve for people like us to help us out? I’m sure Lady Pace wouldn’t mind doing a bit of shopping in the shopping district. Some extra winnings could help in that regard.
Vesela nodded in agreement. Whether it was for gaining some extra money or if it was for the shopping part, Lachlan could only guess.
Jakk: Oh, certainly! It is all about knowing the skill to luck ratio. Devices like slots and dabo are purely chance, while games like poker and dom jot rely more heavily on your own actions.
Pace: Hmmm, I didn’t realize quite how many games there are. This may be a bit overwhelming at first…
Crauw: We’ll have to dabble one at the time. Once we know how it works and made some winnings, go to the next.
Jakk: Have either of you gambled in any way? Maybe taken a bet with a friend or something like that?
Pace: Maybe a few times, but never for money. Just respect and maybe a sticker or two for our helmets…
Crauw: Normally I only serve the drinks to the gamblers. I’ve watched a game here and there, but without knowing the intent of a game, some are difficult to understand.
A waiter carrying a tray with their food arrived and placed the plates in front of them. Talking made Vulcans very hungry as Jakk immediately attacked the food, with Vesela following suit. Lachlan took his time, letting his eyes roam over the food, taking in the scents and smells and composition of the plates.
Jakk: This is delicious! Thank you for the suggestion, Ms. Pace! Or would you prefer Vesela?
Pace: Either works for me! Although, since we’ve shared food and are going to be gambling together, Vesela’ll do just fine if you prefer it!
Crauw: Lady Vesela it is. Enjoy your food, both.
It was only now that Lachlan dived onto his own plate. Sampling a bit of root, the red vegetable there, a bit of meat with the sauce, a white vegetable there.
Jakk: Response
Pace: And what do you think of your meal, Mr. Crauw? Did your adventurous taste net you a new favorite?
He chewed a bit more and swallowed the food down, using a napkin to dab his lips before he answered.
Crauw: It’s excellent, the sauce is excessive and the meat is so tender. It’s delicious. I can see this becoming a favorite, especially if I don’t have to cook it myself. What about yours?
Jakk: Response
Vesela laughed.
Pace: I suppose it is a day of new things seeing as we’ll be gambling shortly!
He scoped up more food on his fork.
Crauw: Shall we have a dessert here, or perhaps there’s an opportunity in the casino for dessert or coffee or tea later?
Jakk: Response
Combining the food, gave him an even better taste of what he had tried before.
Crauw: Which game should we aim for first? Something with cards, dice, or others?
Pace / Jakk: Response
Lachlan chewed some more as he carefully listened.
Crauw: I think I’d like the same odds for everyone. Isn’t there a term like counting cards? I think dice would make the game more even for everyone, don’t you agree, Lady Vesela?
Pace / Jakk: Response
Crauw: Now all we have to do is win a few games, so we can go shopping.
He smiled as he finished the rest of his plate and put down the cutlery. Maybe he had eaten a bit too much but it had been too delicious to let it go to waste.
