(( Concordia District, Adamas ))
The group was still sitting in the loosely-based American diner enjoying a light meal before heading off on the agreed tour. Commander Sevo had managed to offend their newest security officer though it had clearly been unintentional. Maezel had managed to steer the conversation onto Andrew’s family which she hoped would help recover the situation.
Fenn: They sound delightful, you both must be so proud of them. What are they up to these days?
Maezel was pleased to see Andrew smile. She returned it and rested her elbows on the table, leaning forward slightly as she took in his words. She was hoping to find out if there were any unique differences in the child rearing practices in a Human-Vulcan household compared to a Bolian one. Her initial thought was that the difference would be significant. She’d heard the Human adage that it takes a village but on Bolarus IX that tended to be truer in a more literal sense than it was on Earth.
Doran: Well…from what they told me, they are considering returning to school to earn degrees. They haven’t really told me what they want to major in, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they chose something like demolition.
Shardon: Great. That’s just what the world needs, your two wildlings blowing things up for a profession.
Doran: Would you rather them blow things up in the regular manner?
Shardon: No.
It seemed that Shardon disapproved of the direction the twins had taken. Perhaps he preferred they pursued something safer? To Maezel, the fact that he felt comfortable voicing his disapproval showed that he cared for them in his own way. It was lovely to see and it showed just how strong a family unit they really were.
Sevo: Well, sounds like you have an interesting home life. None so for me yet.
Doran: Interesting is one word for it.
Shardon: Agreed.
Fenn: Any you, Commander? Any micro mad scientists running around back on Trill?
Sevo: Not this host. I’ve had children in past hosts. Each experience was different.
Maezel thought that must be a surreal experience. To remember the lives of past hosts and their past families as distinctly separate from the current one but just as much a part of your being was not something she could imagine.
Fenn: And what are twins like?
Doran: I…guess each of my kids are a little different from each other.
Shardon: They still share enough interests to be troublesome.
Maezel returned to her dwindling supply of fries while the conversation about the twins rolled on a little more. They certainly sounded like quite the pair. Hopefully Andrew wouldn’t deprive the Gorkon of their presence for too long as meeting them would certainly be an interesting experience. The thought was interrupted when the conversation turned to expanding families.
Sevo: Someday, perhaps.
Fenn: Definitely, but not right now. I’ve only just started my Starfleet career and I’m focussed on that right now.
Doran: I think I’m a little too old to have kids now. ::He paused.:: Unless you would like to adopt?
Shardon: That is probably something we should discuss in private.
Maezel nodded slightly in agreement at Shardon’s answer. Such a thing was probably best decided in the family home rather than in a diner and over a milkshake, even if it did have sprinkles.
Shardon: I fear grandchildren more.
Fenn: Oh I’m sure grandchildren won’t be that bad. The second you’ve had enough you can hand them back to the parents.
Sevo: Response
Doran: I don’t think we have to worry about that…unless my kids adopted a child. They both prefer the same gender when it comes to dating.
Adoption. Another similarity between them and Bolarus. On her world, adoptions were considered as strong as blood. While Maezel’s family had never adopted as far as she knew the fact was that if they had there would be no distinction between biological siblings and non-biological siblings. They would simply be part of the family.
Fenn: ::swallowing the last of her fries:: Adoption is a noble thing. Would you two ever consider that?
Sevo: Response
Doran: We could discuss it further in private too.
Maezel smiled slightly that the question hadn’t elicited an automatic no. She turned to Commander Sevo, interested to know what the Trill attitude towards adoption was.
Fenn: And you Commander, would you ever adopt? If you don’t mind me asking of course.
Sevo: Response
Fenn: Fair enough. And can you adopt on Trill? What’s the general feeling towards it there?
Doran / Sevo / Shardon: Response
During a natural break in the conversation, Maezel checked the time on her PADD. She didn’t want the group to be late for the tour or they’d have to kill hours before the next one. Fortunately, they still had another hour or so before they had to leave so she continued the conversation.
Fenn: So Doran…or do you prefer Andrew?
Doran / Sevo / Shardon: Response
Fenn: Got it, so do you have any words of wisdom for when it comes to raising children?
Doran / Sevo / Shardon: Response
