The team stood with a giant singularity core hanging over their shoulders like a giant beholder waiting to strike.  The core was the focus of everyones attention; it’s instabilities were threatening not just the facility itself, but their own safety.  But like all such problems, it wasn’t just one problem but several, wrapped together like a Russian nesting doll.

zh'Tisav: Bypassing any damage should be straightforward. That might help with the core instability, but likely won't solve the bigger problem. Thea, I think your feedback idea melts ice. If the gate's being powered from the other side, then the gate is connecting the two systems. Anything done to it on the other side could affect our system here. I hate to keep comparing things to a short circuit, but that's what it is. Blocking any feedback, or redirecting it, might solve a lot of our problems.

Thea nodded again.

Kairis: That's what we thought. ::She nodded.:: We'd have to identify what's coming through the gate and causing the interference. I imagine it's nothing that appears on normal scans or diagnostics, or the staff here would have figured it out already.

Sevo: And how will we determine exactly where on this side the shorts are? Or at least the ones that are causing the instability?

zh'Tisav: There's three of us; one can look at any feedback from the gate, another can look at power distribution, and the other can see to the backup power, just in case. Thoughts? Or am I just fighting a makra with a stick?

Kairis: That all makes sense to me, sir. I'm happy to take on the backups if Commander Sevo would like to investigate the feedback coming through the gate? ::She glanced toward the Trill.:: It wouldn't need deep engineering knowledge; your scientific background probably gives you an advantage there, looking for something that's there but shouldn't be.

Sevo: Show me where the gate energy is supposed to be coming in.

zh'Tisav: There should be a distribution map around here somewhere…

She looked about for the appropriate display, but didn’t get very far.  Vylaa was used to the normal hum of a reactor room, much as a child grew used to it’s Zhavey’s heartbeat.  So she hadn’t really noticed anything amiss here until now.  Until the singularity reactor buzzed like an angry swarm.  Their eyes shifted as one to the sphere at the heart of the room and watched it shake and rattle in it’s housing like a caged preshava.  And then, as quickly as it had started, it stopped.

Kairis: I, uh... Think we should hurry.

Sevo: What…uh…what was that? Power feedback?

zh'Tisav: That, or another overload.

They were running out of time, what with the facility trying to rip it’s own heart out.

Sevo: Show me where to go to analyze the gate feedback. Is there a console to check?

zh’Tisav: It should be over there...

Kairis: Response

The MSD wasn’t as prominent as it was on the Gorkon.  There it took up the whole back wall of the Bridge, and the pool table in Main Engineering as well as a few other places.  It was smaller here, but viewable from both sides.  Ayiana looked at it, with the stance of someone trying to make sense of a rat’s nest of wiring.

Sevo: Looks like a jumble to me. Which lines go to the gate?

Vylaa approached the display from the other side.  From there, the light cast on the Trill’s face made her spots stand out even more starkly.  The zhen looked at the see-thru screen, identifying main branches, secondary branches, and even auxiliary branches.  But one stood out, not connecting to any of the Outpost’s systems but one redacted blob on the screen.  She pointed it out, briefly noting it glowed in the same cerulean shade as her own skin.

zh’Tisav: Here.  It’s big, and only powers one thing.  ::Glanced toward the Tyrellian.::  Which means it’s a straight shot for any feedback...

Kairis: Response

Sevo: I think I can manage this.

The Trill lifted her ever-present tricorder and got to work.  Vylaa, for her part, stayed at the MSD for the time being.  It was an invaluable resource for re-establishing normal power flow.  She found it intuitively easy to read; the color coding was similar to that used on the Gorkon: Blues and greens signaled normal or near-normal flow.  Amber was failing areas.  Angry red signaled cut-off areas.

zh’Tisav: If I’m reading these numbers right… ::She paused briefly, taking a second glance::  we’ve got some areas about to fail.  Unfortunately, our teams are in those areas…

Kairis / Sevo: Response

zh’Tisav: The auxiliary network is still fine, so I can reroute.  The problem is the systems seem to be failing because of a glut of power.  I need to dump it somewhere…

Kairis / Sevo: Response

zh’Tisav: I’m thinking of using the facility’s weather shield.  It’s inactive now, but if I turn it on… well, it’s a giant forcefield, it can be used to radiate excess energy into the atmosphere.  Problem is, with it up, there’s no way we could be beamed out in an emergency…

She stopped, unwilling to outright make a decision that might get everyone killed.

Kairis / Sevo: Response
