Xandria Cain and Miaxdiso Avoi were perhaps not the welcoming committee anyone deserved, but they were the welcoming committee Ensign Andrew Doran was going to get. All things told, he could have had worse luck. Xandria was in his department, so she could begin getting him oriented, and Miax was able to befriend literally anyone...so it definitely could have been worse. He could have joined and beamed straight into a firefight, or faced down some Borg, or something.

Cain: I saw you're in security and tactical, so am I. Do you lean more security, or more tactical then? What's your expertise?

Doran: I lean more towards security. My previous experience is leading the security team for my father’s company.

It was good to hear he had previous experience in the field. Folks came to Starfleet from all sorts of backgrounds, but she always enjoyed working with people who'd learned some of their trade outside the fleet first. There was a commonality there, with her background in FedSec.

Avoi: Well! With all that inside knowledge, you were no doubt the perfect candidate for the role.

Cain: And you mentioned your family?

Doran: Yes. I’m married and have twins, then of course, my father. I also have two siblings.

Avoi: Twins! My oh my, that sounds like quite the challenge.

Xandria raised an eyebrow.

Cain: Sounds like a handful.

The trio entered a turbolift to whisk them off on their search for coffee. Miax, predictable as clockwork, whipped out a compact mirror to quadruple-check her appearance, just as she had been doing in every shiny surface they passed. Xandria couldn't help the smile that quirked at the corner of her mouth at the familiarity, though she kept her gaze fixed ahead on the turbolift doors, hands clasped casually behind her back.

Doran: My kids are adults now, so it feels like I could leave them alone without them blowing too much up.

Avoi: A troublesome duo, are they? ::She tittered, before puckering her lips in the mirror.:: I don’t think I would have survived if my brother Cigris had been a twin. One of him is quite enough.

Cain: One of him is already one too many.

Doran seemed lost in thought as they exited the turbolift, perhaps thinking of his family. If the twins were grown, would his spouse be joining him on board eventually? Or did their distinct job requirements necessitate a transition to long distance? She imagined that could be difficult.

Doran: Then again, they might find jobs where they can blow something up without getting into trouble for it.

Ahead of them glowed the glorious, familiar arch of the Brew Continuum, motto and all. The smell of freshly-brewed coffee and tea wafted out into the hallway, accompanied by the scent of warm pastries. What was the special today? Though Xandria wasn't sure why she bothered to wonder, she always got the same thing. Miax pulled out a perfume to spritz the air with, and Xandria rolled her eyes.

Avoi: Here we are! The Brew Continuum. Rather appropriate for your needs, Ensign Doran, wouldn’t you say so?

Miax led the way, spinning into the cafe in all its old earth style glory.

((The Brew Continuum, USS Gorkon))

Miax clapped her hands together, spotting an empty table in the rather bustling establishment. The tail ends of missions tended to do that. Folks just getting off a hard shift would grab a coffee, if alcohol wasn't their vice or they needed the energy boost. Folks relieving them would be getting going for the day. And of course, everyone was excited to socialize and speculate about shore leave.

Well. Almost everyone. Xandria wasn't the most sociable person in the world, and Doran seemed fairly quiet himself, though maybe that was just because he was new.

Avoi: There! Somewhere for us to sit down. And oh, look! There’s Jim. And Shakaar, and Jackson, and I believe Novak. Why, it’s quite alive in here today. It must be all the buzz of where are we going? And when will we get there?

Doran: Everyone wanted some caffeine I guess.

Cain: Caffeine and gossip. Sometimes I think you could run the ship on it.

Avoi: One can find a lot out in a crew lounge. ::She smiled mischievously at the new security officer.:: That’s a little tip for you.

That earned Miax a light smile from the new security officer.

Doran: I’m a security officer, not a spy collecting information.

Xandria could think of a few security officers she'd known who could stand to remember that. She glanced at the menu board with the casual air of someone who wasn't actually reading it at all.

Cain: So what'll you have, Doran?

Doran: The Chai Tea sounds good. Oh, and they have some pastries here!

Chai tea and pastries? Intriguing. He wasn't trying to prove anything by ordering something plain or expected. She appreciated that. And she caught him scanning the cafe with a look she knew well---he definitely had previous background in security. They were going to get along.

Avoi: Response.

Doran: So…I know I’ll be in security, but what will I actually be expected to do?

Cain: We're all security and tactical over here. You have your speciality, but you never know when you'll be called on to act in more of a tactical capacity as well. It's good to stay up to date on all sides. ::She crossed her arms.:: There's the everyday stuff, armory checks, weapons and security certifications and upgrades...then of course, you could get called for an away team, or end up battling the Borg or something.

That might sound like an exaggeration. It wasn't

Avoi: Response.

Doran: I also don’t know the rules about carrying a weapon

Cain: You'll be issued a phaser of course, and personal weapons you can clear with Commander Neathler---she's our chief. I carry a familial d'k tahg.

Currently holstered securely in her boot. She kept it handier when she was on an away team, but on the Gorkon it was just peace of mind. And a reminder that she needed to check in with her godmother...that call was overdue. Perhaps after this. Or tomorrow. It had been a long day.

Avoi / Doran: Response

Xandria put in her order (black coffee with a shot, as usual) and gave the others a chance to do the same. She slid into a chair at the table Miax had spotted, her back to the brick wall, and folded her hands on the table.

Cain: Will your spouse be joining us at some point?

Avoi / Doran: Response
