((Moss Fields, Gateside Dimension))
The stampede was now over, and Vylaa, Thea and Ayiana needed to get down from the rocks to continue their search for the gate. The rocks were unhelpfully steep, so the trio would have to find a way to scale down them. Vylaa scouted around the lip of their boulder. More rocks were piled up on one side, forming a platform of sorts midway down.
zh’Tisav: Here, there’s more rocks on this side. We can do it in two stages, to that boulder midway, and then to the ground. Hopefully there’ll still be ground when we get there.
The spotted redhead joined Vylaa by the rocks edge and looked over it.
Sevo: Looks like it’ll work, if we’re careful.
zh’Tisav: oO I can’t help but think that last bit was added for me… Oo
Kairis: Mm
They lined up to go down. Despite her earlier suggestion, Vylaa went first. She eased down slowly, seeking out what purchase her fat-gloved fingers and booted toes could find. There wasn’t much and Vylaa’s descent ended up being mostly a controlled slide. She made it to the midway point and stood back from the wall to let her companions go next. Once they were all three descended they stood at the second edge.
Sevo: Right, one more step to go.
Kairis: ::She briefly unmuted.:: I don't know whether I admire or fear people who do this for fun.
zh’Tisav: oORight. Second verse, same as the first. Oo It’s more fun than you think. The EV suits make it less so.
They repeated their first descent, and soon their feet were sending up poofs of cinnabar moss dust once again. Moments later the pile of rocks rumbled and sank back into the ground, disappearing like a feline slinking around the corner after the last scritch had been scratched.
Sevo: That’s interesting. You think whatever was controlling it knew we needed to get down, and kept the boulders up?
Kairis: I don't know. ::She stared at the ground, the moss swelling up like water to cover the bare patch where the boulders had been.:: Maybe it's another response to our thoughts. We're done with it, so it vanishes?
zh’Tisav: Or like they were toying with us?
Sevo: Right, with that excitement over, we need to find the “highway” again. Everyone, bring out your tricorders!
Kairis: We should double-check, but I think it's where we last saw it? ::She gestured.:: The forest hasn't moved, and I can still see the depression in the ground that marked the main vine trunk.
zh’Tisav: And the map doesn’t seem to have shifted either.
Sevo: Response
Kairis: That's a good thing, right? It means our theory was right, the closer we are to the trunk, the more fixed the surroundings are. ::She tilted her head in thought.:: Maybe that's why the boulders disappeared. Everything on the main line wants to return to its base state.
Sevo: Response
zh'Tisav: In any case, it helps us. ::She took a step toward the depression.:: At least one think in this place is constant.
Sevo / Kairis: Response
They hadn’t run too far from the verge, so it was only a matter of minutes before they slipped past the last sapling to step back into the depression. The herd was long gone, so too the demon beasts that had hunted them, probably off to rest and digest their meal. Vylaa realized perhaps she was building too much of a parallel to the wildlife of home. Those things were plant-adjacent and she wasn’t so sure that plants could digest.
zh’Tisav: ;;Points.:: It was this direction, right?
Sevo / Kairis: Response
The depression didn’t look deep from the edge, but was broad enough that when the team reached the middle it actually did rise above their heads. They continued onward, the forest off on one hand, the scrubland off to the other, the moss poofing burgundy clouds beneath their feet.
zh’Tisav: ::Halting.:: I can see a light up ahead. Is that the gate? Or some other hell spawn this place made up for us?
Sevo / Kairis: Response
