((The Vineknot, Gateside Dimension))

The data gathered from their remote tricorder confirmed the xenoflora's specific sensitivity to infrared wavelengths. After swiftly and successfully modifying their environmental suits to filter out the offending spectrum, the team could now safely utilise their lights without inciting the violent wrath of the surrounding plantlife.

With the canopy now illuminated by the safe, filtered glow, V'Lar collated the telemetry streaming from their distant tricorder, using the ongoing reaction to formulate a hypothesis.

V’Lar: I would theorise that since we know the xenoflora in this dimension pre-digests live prey, it transports subdued subjects to a central feeding ground or digestive node for consumption. If I am correct and if anything remains of the scientists, recovery will be hazardous. Perhaps we could weaponise the xenoflora's extreme photosensitivity?

Pace: Hmmm, not a bad idea if worse comes to worse…

V'Lar tilted one eyebrow by a fraction of a degree.

oO If a hypothesis I formulated lacked merit, I would not vocalise it. It would be highly illogical for me to propose a 'bad idea' given the circumstances. Oo

V'Lar chose not to vocalise her thought, concluding that making such an observation would not serve the mission's overall efficiency. Instead she added it to a mental list.

Tahna: Response

Pace: Would we be using the tricorder that the forest has now? Or I could ::She cleared her throat.:: creatively engineer one of our remaining tricorders to be a kind of light grenade?

Now bathed in the safe, filtered glow of their modified lights, V'Lar could visually register her colleagues' faces as they communicated. She noted Pace's slight, possibly nervous, throat clearing as the younger officer suggested intentionally destroying Starfleet equipment.

V’Lar: Having such a modification available does not force us to deploy it, but it allows us to retain it as an option if needed. Still, given we have a remote link to the deployed tricorder, we can still use it.

Tahna: Response

Before they could further their discussion, the terrain violently heaved upward. V'Lar instantly widened her stance, bending her knees slightly to absorb the shock and maintain her centre of gravity. From the periphery of her vision, she observed Lieutenant Pace stumble but manage to keep her balance.

Then, just as the violent tremor reached its peak, the vibrations vanished entirely. An eerie, heavy stillness settled over the pitch-black canopy. V'Lar swiftly checked the First Officer's tricorder, which she had not yet returned.

Pace: That’s… odd?

V’Lar: The telemetry feed from the deployed tricorder has abruptly terminated. The final readings indicated the duritanium casing was under significant pressure. It is highly probable the device has been sufficiently damaged to disable its optical emitter, thereby pacifying the environment.

Pace/Tahna: Response

V'Lar: Given the force that would have needed to be exerted on the tricorder, proceeding is risky. I would strongly advise a contingency.

Pace/Tahna: Response
