((Aithela Cove, Deluvia IV))

She turned her gaze back to the water, watching the reactive patterns of the plankton.

Standing amidst the bioluminescent glow of Aithela Cove, having retreated to the shoreline in order to escape the immediate crush of the Tidesong festival, V’Lar continued her dissection of the First Officer’s psychology, specifically the strain of making decisions without the comfort of scientific certainty.

V’Lar: Does operating within that divergence not create a significant psychological strain? To know that the best answer may still result in a negative outcome?

V'Lar observed the facial micro-expression—the 'wry' smile—which usually indicated a recognition of irony.

Tahna: That’s why we employ counselors, V’Lar. Among many other reasons.

She considered the role of the ship's counselling staff. For species that lacked adequate mental discipline, external psychological maintenance was a necessary inefficiency to prevent performance degradation.

V’Lar: I have noted that the ship's counselling staff appear well utilised. Regardless, counselling is a reactive measure; it addresses symptoms but not causes. I am inquiring about the proactive logic. In medicine, the correct treatment yields a predictable result. Command appears to lack that causal certainty.

Tahna: You have to make the same decisions in a triage scenario, for example. The best answer may still result in loss of life. Surely you’re not unaffected just because some losses may be inevitable.

V'Lar conceded the logic, though she rejected the emotional implication.

V’Lar: That is an accurate correlation. In my case, I do not permit that reality to become an emotional burden. I do not view the loss as a failure of the self; it is merely the result of the equation containing variables beyond my control.

Tahna: Response

V’Lar: I am aware that, to non-Vulcans, our methods often appear cold, but they are born of necessity, much like your own command decisions.

Tahna: Response

There was a parallel between the burden of command and the discipline of logic, yet few outside of her own species truly grasped the severity of the latter.

oO Our ways are not merely a cultural preference, they are a cage for a beast that still lives within all Vulcans. Oo

V’Lar: Indeed. Strict adherence to logic is a necessary cultural and mental discipline for our species' survival. Our ancient history, before the adoption of Surak's teachings, was characterised by barbaric violence. Put simply, we do not have the luxury of allowing ourselves to succumb to our emotions.

Tahna: Response

She glanced back toward the festival. They had traversed a significant distance from the Tidesong celebration, seeking the relative solitude of the shoreline to better observe the phenomenon. However, the sounds of the crowd and their music were still audible. V'Lar calculated the trajectory of the coastline. Walking further would yield diminishing returns.

V’Lar: I believe we have sufficient data on the shoreline. However, it may be agreeable to observe the phenomenon from an elevated vantage point.

She gave a nod with her head, gesturing toward a municipal transport station.

V’Lar: I have observed the local public transport running aerial tours. Would you be interested in a change of perspective?

Tahna: Response
