(( Captain’s Ready Room, Deck 1, USS Artemis ))
After her meeting with Yogan Yalu, she wasn’t sure if she felt better or worse about the Artemis being stationed in the Borderlands. If there was one thing that did bring her comfort, it was having an experienced strategic operations officer and a decorated mission specialist to offer informative takes on the region.
Another source of comfort was the transfer of a new Chief of Security. On smaller ships like the Artemis, it was typical for the security and tactical departments to be combined, unlike on their previous Excalibur. However, with such an experienced tactician like Vitor, it made sense to keep him at his post and focused on protecting the exterior of the ship while bringing in a new officer to handle the ship’s internal security in conjunction with Lieutenant Dakora’s skillset.
She’d consulted with Fleet Captain Rainier, who recommended Lieutenant Gabriel Osuna, and she’s put in the transfer request without question. When the door chime rang, she noted that her new security chief was right on time.
Osuna: ::Pressing the door chime:: Lieutenant Osuna reporting as ordered.
MacKenzie: Come in.
When the door slid open, Addison watched the moderately-tall man make his way into the office, doing his best to maintain a stance of attention while trying to keep track of a jar of hasperat. While she was trying to size up the officer, she couldn’t help but keep glancing back to the jar.
MacKenzie:
Welcome to the Artemis, Lieutenant Osuna.
Osuna: Glad to be here. The Artemis seems like a fine ship – and with the collective experience being brought on board before her maiden voyage, I anticipate a smooth start.
She nodded skeptically.
MacKenzie: We could be so lucky. Captain Rainier gave you a glowing recommendation. Tell me a little about your service.
Osuna: My prior Starfleet experience is entirely aboard Space Stations, ma’am. Three years aboard Deep Space 224, ma’am – and five aboard DS9 before that. ::A brief pause:: Before that I worked as a civilian security consultant for the Diplomatic Corps. I like to think that I adapt quickly.
MacKenzie: Well, adaptation is important in the Borderlands. This is a particularly unstable region of space with a lot of powers vying for… attention. I assume that with your service on 224 that you’re up to speed on the latest reports?
She knew the answer before he responded, but the question begged verbal confirmation.
Osuna: Response
MacKenzie: Very good. On the Artemis, the security and tactical departments will operate independently. I know it’s a bit unorthodox for a ship this size, but I’ve got some very talented officers in both positions ::she nodded in his direction, referencing him as one of the aforementioned:: and I don’t want to overburden either of your duties.
Osuna: Response
MacKenzie: If you want to get up to speed with matters of internal security on the Artemis, Lieutenant Talos Dakora, our Intelligence Chief, might be a good place to start.
Osuna: Response
Addison let a brief silence hang in the air over the two of them before finally pointing to the jar in Osuna’s hand.
MacKenzie: Are you trying to bribe your boss on your first day, Lieutenant?
Osuna: Response
She waved both her hands and shook her head.
MacKenzie: No, but I do have a particular affinity for hasperat, so next time you show up at my door with a jar, you’d better have enough to share with the class.
Osuna: Response
