Addison took advantage of the opportunity to get to know a new ensign as a simultaneous means for dodging familiar faces – they’d likely want to ask how she was doing, and the woman in front of her likely knew better than to bother asking. This way, she got to meet the new blood, avoided needing to speak about anything personal, but still got points for sticking around the gathering.

MacKenzie: So, what brings you to our science department? Do you have a specialty or an area of focus you’re drawn to?

Addison watched the woman physically relax a bit. She assumed that, much like herself, it was far easier to discuss professional topics than anything personal. Perhaps they were both thankful for the redirect in questioning.

Jovenan:
I have a degree in Planetary Sciences from before joining Starfleet. In the Academy, I specialised in astronomy and biology, to broaden my skillset. Of course, the science programme also included various other topics.

MacKenzie: Well, one of the best things about serving on a Vesta-class ship is that we have all the labs a budding scientist could hope for. Now, we just need to keep you out of a shuttle long enough for you to get in some time at the bench.

Jovenan: Believe me, sir, I sincerely wish to stay out of shuttles for time being!

MacKenzie: With Commander Etan’s departure, I’m sure you’ll be a candidate for Chief Science Officer in no time, if that’s something you’re interested in.

Jovenan: Th- Thank you for your confidence, sir. I’ll try to live up your expectations.

She offered a reassuring smile.

MacKenzie: Expectations, perhaps not. More like, possibility. I will say that you’ve demonstrated critical thinking and good judgment in your time here so far. That counts for a lot in my book.

Jovenan: Uh… I understand you have background in research as well, am I right, sir? Medical science if I remember correctly.

Addison simultaneously took a sip of her drink and nodded.

MacKenzie: I’m a surgeon, really, but I’ve published some research regarding prosthetics. Interesting to see where one’s career goes - I really had no interest in prosthetics at all, until I’ve encountered crewmembers who have either had or needed them… Seeing how much the technology was really lacking, it made sense to develop something that made continuing to serve in Starfleet easier.

Jovenan: Response

Addison nodded.

MacKenzie: Well, the thing that I’ve learned about Starfleet is that, when an opportunity presents itself, it’s smart to walk through the crack in the door. My entire career progression has been a series of calls to serve. No doubt it will be the same for you.

Jovenan: Response

MacKenzie: A word of advice? Don’t question whatever the universe is sending your way. Roll with it.

Jovenan: Response
