Ensign Jovenan – We'll meet again, if I get sick

Jovenan: I read that some of the crew used to serve on USS Resolution. Were you there too?

Adea: I was; I was acting Captain at the time it was destroyed.

Jovenan: Oh. I’m, uh, sorry. I didn’t…

Adea: No need to apologise, Jovenan. You weren’t to know. And besides, part of the fallout from that catastrophe was we all got transferred here; not to mention the fact that I got my Commander’s pip out of it. ::he paused:: I’d have preferred it if it hadn’t cost us fourteen lives.

Jovenan felt bad for asking that from the Doctor. He was assuring her there was nothing to be apologetic about, as she hadn’t known it. The Starfleet life had its risks, but it was probably never easy to lose people. Jovenan wondered if the Doctor blamed of himself of what had happened. She was sure he had done everything he could to safe them, but she didn’t know much about the events.

Jovenan: I’m sorry for the loss.

An awkward silence followed. It was eventually broken by the senior officer.

Adea: You said you got your first degree from Hurkos… How many degrees do you have?

Jovenan: Oh, uh… Just two. I counted passing the Starfleet Academy as the other. I majored in Planetary Sciences in Hurkos, so when I got to the Academy to major in science, I chose astronomy and biology as my specialities. You know, to broaden my skillset.

Adea: Response

Jovenan didn’t get over with the awkward atmosphere the previous discussion had made. The Doctor had tried to clear it out with further small talk, but she was only thinking this might be a good time to wrap things up. She was unsure if she could just leave or if she should wait for the Doctor to dismiss her, but she eventually stood up.

Jovenan: Thank you for the medical examination and the chat, Comman… Doctor. I don’t want to take more of your time. It was getting to know you better!

Adea: Response

Jovenan: I will. Thank you again!

And so, she left. On the other side of the door, she gave out a long breath out. The meeting had gone well, overall, despite the faux pas near the end. She hoped the Doctor didn’t think much of it. Most likely, it was her who was making it a big issue.
