((Captain's Ready Room - Deck 1 - USS Thor ))
Lorian joined the rest of the crew a few moments before the Captain began.
Kells: I believe you all know the basics of the mission, courtesy of the conversation I had with Commander Teller and Admiral, now Ambassador, Turner, but let me review the salient points: Starfleet has dispatched us to the Ysdyen Nebula, just outside the region of space called the Menthar Corridor, to determine the fate of the Vel Maijan colony. The colony was established in 2159, and reported lost in 2164 -- and by lost, I mean the whole solar system simply vanished. Now, apparently, it's reappeared -- in the depths of the nebula -- and Starfleet has detected a very weak, but very real, distress call being sent from the world.
Kells: Before we arrived, in approximately -- what was it, Commander Teller?
Teller: Be just shy of sixty four hours now, Captain. Should mention the last few hours will be at conventional warp, didn't think you wanted to try a slipstream corridor exit into an unstable nebula, sir.
Kells: Thank you. So you have that much time to complete the tasks I have for you to prepare us for our arrival. Commander Pandorn, you'll lead group one, with Lieutenant Lovar, Doctor Alieth, and Ambassador Turner. I want you to work on research into the colony world. What was this world? It's pre-Federation, that I know, but it's separated from us by two hundred years, and that's assuming that the distress call is coming from the colony descendants. I want your group to dig into the 2100s history of the region, as well as analysis of the distress call and speculation about who we might meet when we arrive there.
Pandorn: ::nodding to each member of his team:: Aye, sir. We'll be as informed as we can be.
Kells: Lieutenant Garcia, you'll be in charge of group two. I assume that we'll visit the world's surface when we arrive, so I want you to prepare for that eventuality. I want your team to think of everything -- prepare for every contingency you can think of. Take Captain Brell, Second Lieutenant Greaves, and Ensign Dar.
Garcia: Understood. Team two to anticipate any and all requirements of a surface visit. :: Ben nodded. ::
Kells: Doctor MacKenzie, group three is yours. I also want you to prepare for our exploration, except I want you to think medically, or at least biologically. (beat, with a smile) I imagine that won't be too difficult for you. (another beat) The Ysdyen Nebula is already known to play havoc with ships and systems, with consequences from hull degradation to communications and sensor loss. I can only assume that we'll want to consider what that means both for anyone on the ship -- in case of a shield and hull failure, space forbid -- as well as for any away team. I also want your team to consider every contingency, so I"ve assigned you Ensign Wilkins and Commander Brodie.
MacKenzie: ::nodding, making notes on her PADD:: I’ll meet with them immediately.
Kells: Commander Teller, I'm going to call on your engineering expertise to lead group four. I want you to prep the Thor, as much as you can. Find out what exactly the nebula does to ships and their systems -- there isn't much in the computer, but there's some -- and try and prepare us for that. Hopefully Sirok, Parker, and Quen can help you there.
Teller: Aye sir, be a pleasure. It'll also give me an opportunity to speak to Mr. Sirok. I want to discuss the future of the Engineering team with him.
Kells: Thanks to our impressive propulsion systems, time is of the essence here. I'll be around to help and advise as necessary, but please feel free to use and assign your team members however you see fit, and to ask for assistance if and when you need it. Do you have any questions?
Pandorn: Just one, sir. Since we're dealing with a 200 year gap, is the Prime Directive, Temporal or otherwise in play? I've had my share of time displacements and they never turn out well.
Kells: Response?
Garcia: Captain, two things. :: Ben smiled and looked at the table. :: I’m guessing we won’t know until we’re there. :: Ben looked back up. :: But, it’s worth the ask. Is there a loose number on the size of the away team … They going down on a shuttle or transporter?
Kells/Teller: Response?
Garcia: Appreciate that. :: Ben smiled a nod. :: Thank, sir.
Teller: None for me, sir. I'll have my team assemble in main engineering and we'll have preparations under way in a few hours. ::with a smile:: I'll personally batten down the hatches if I have to.
Kells: Response
Pandorn: Understood.
Teller: Alright folks, you heard the Captain - rally your teams and get into it. I'll need progress reports from all teams before we hit the nebula, so call it sixty hours from now. Let’s get to work.
They all rose to get to work. Lorian was anxious to get started, the mission seemed truly fascinating.
Pandorn: Alright everyone. We'll use the Science offices since they are closer, and more roomy than the Security section. We'll need a full history of this wayward solar system, especially the colony. We must be mindful of the 200 year gap in time and take it into account should we make contact with any survivors. Meet in the Science Department in 1 hour.
Lovar: Aye, sir.
Alieth/Turner: Response
They left the room, Krindo getting this nagging feeling that he does whenever there is a temporal displacement situation. A headache was beginning already.
((Chief Science Officer's Office - Deck 3 - 30 minutes later))
Lorian arrived a bit earlier than the others. He had grabbed a quick bite to eat, an Earth recipe he found called "poutine". It was quite good in his objective opinion. After finishing his meal he looked around his office. To put it lightly, it was a bit of a mess. He hadn't had much time to unpack before the mission began, so all his old office supplies were scattered in boxes around the room, the only thing unpacked being his large cat tree in the corner of the room which Captain Patches was laying on top of. The Vulcan gathered said boxes and put them in a pile against the wall. This would have to do.
After finishing his tidy work, he got onto the real deal. He sat down at his desk and began pulling up information on the lost colony, sadly there wasn't really much. It was colonized before the federation was even formed and in an extremely remote part of the galaxy. There was only a few records and reports and nothing more. Maybe he could find something in those reports that could clue them into what happened...
While this train of thought was getting closer to the station, the iconic sound of his doorbell rang from the front of the room. Lorian looked up from his terminal and spoke
Lovar: Come in.
Lorian watched as Pandorn entered the room and sat down in front of him. He gave the security chief a brief salute and continued his work until, a moment later, his bell rang again. This time, before he could answer, the Admiral opened the door.
Turner: Lovar? Anyone at home?
Lovar: Over here, sir.
He gave another brief salute.
Lovar: I apologize for the lack of decor, I'm still settling in.
Turner: Response?
Pandorn: Greetings, Doctor. I must apologize for not meeting you sooner. I tend to get a one track mind on assignments.
Alieth: I have come to serve, Lieutenant Commander Pandorn :: she said in response. After a split second, she tilted her head over her left shoulder before she added:: Apologies are unnecessary, Lieutenant Commander, as well as illogical.
Pandorn: Still, it is impolite to ignore someone I will be working with. It is not conducive to a well-functioning team.
Alieth: A commendable aspiration towards most of the crew, Lieutenant Commander, which, nevertheless, is superfluous in this case.
Turner: Response
Lovar: Now that everyone's settled in, what's the plan, sir?
Pandorn: We do this with two avenues. Lieutenant Lovar, you and Doctor Alieth focus on the colony and the distress call. Who could be there, what the possible effects of the time displacement and any possible reaction to us if and when we make contact so I can assess what precautions to take should we need for Lieutenant Garcia to send an away team. Admiral Turner, ma'am, you and I will examine the surrounding system. Since the entire system was affected, any of the major powers near the Corridor who had ships in the area when it happened will most certainly be hostile to us. If I were a betting man, I'd say it would be the Tholians, but I'd not discount anything.
oO Time displacement, eh. German would love this. Oo
Alieth: Sir, I would work thoroughly with Lieutenant Lovar, nevertheless, I have some questions I need you to answer in advance.
Pandorn: Response
Alieth: My first question is what colony and distress call we are tasked to investigate. I can do a research of all the colonies in the general direction in which we are heading in a hazardous situation, but you will understand that it will require a time that we will probably lack. ::She blinked a couple of times:: The term "Corridor" may allow me to reduce the search to colonial systems in areas with that designation, but there is still an 89.89% likelihood that over 450 colonies could match that search
Turner: Response
Pandorn: Response
Lorian took in the information as Alieth nodded slightly.
Alieth: That actually has more sense. Could you elaborate on the tasks that Lieutenant Lovar and I are required to perform?
Pandorn/Turner: Response
Lovar: A classic research project, my specialty.
Alieth/Pandorn/Turner: Response?
