“Not A Metaphor”

Brodie stood on the cliffs and looked out over the ocean as the waves crashed against the rocks below. The winds were whipping the sea up and he could see the swells meeting producing a cross-sea in the bay. Woe betide any sailor who tried to go out in that. There was a certain geometry to the phenomenon that was soothing – the lattice of waves extending out towards the horizon.
That was where the storm was.
He could see the dark clouds hovering, swirling it was going to be a wet and windy day on Til’ahn. It was a good job he didn’t really believe in omens. Still, it was a shame he wouldn’t get to see one last sunrise before he left. The winds flicked the sides of his field jacket and blew through his hair as the clouds moved closer and he thought about the last two years. Aria, Jorey, Pavlova, Hendon, Williams…both of them…Cain, T’Lea – probably more in the time before he arrived. A lot of history had passed through the Embassy, and with the acceptance of the Laudeans as a provisional member it was a privilege to be part of that final chapter…or was it the first...or maybe both.
The clouds were closer now, the static in the air was palpable. Suddenly a fork of energy crashed into the ocean’s surface – the cloudburst coming with it. Alex counted…one…two…thr…and there it was the heavy rumble of thunder across the sky, echoing off the cliff walls.
That settled it then…it was time to ride the lightning. He tapped his commbadge.

He vanished in a blue shimmer as the rainfront reached him, soaking the stony ground where he had just been standing.
