((Corridor - Deck 325, Voth Generation Ship Igirni - Delta Quadrant))
The Voth had moved fast, and Drex hadn’t had time to get his people and Elder Verrla to safety. It had been a gamble, given he didn’t know the layout of the massive ship and he had lost.
A group of eight appeared at the end of the corridor, fully armed. The ship itself did not appear to be in a defensive state, which made them seem even more out of place. The second thing Drex noticed was worse: they did not seem to recognize their own Elder. That was deeply unsettling.
The two in front raised their weapons toward the Starfleet officers and Verrla. There was no need for discussion. Drex slowly lifted his hands, still holding the tricorder.
Drex: Who are you?
Verrla: ::With a calm she had long since lost:: Do forgive our ignorance. Your uniform is strange and lacks the usual indications of rank.
Avariswal / Mensah : Response
Tobrak: I am the one giving orders. ::pointing to Mensah:: You are outnumbered and outgunned. Stand down. Now.
Verrla: ::Strained:: Do what he says please.
oO No need to ask us twice. Oo
The Eagle’s First Officer was definitely not known for his bravery. Besides, he was almost completely disarmed. Almost, because he could, in theory, try to overload the tricorder’s power cell and trigger an explosion. But from what he had understood, the group in front of him was not the only contingent of strange Voth aboard.
He kept his hands raised, clearly visible.
Drex: We’ll do as you say. We came aboard to assist, nothing more.
Avariswal / Mensah: Response
The brute turned to Verrla and gave her a low bow. It did not seem a gesture of respect, but one of mockery. Who, in the wide ocean of space, were these people? A group of mutineers choosing to act at the worst possible moment, when the ship itself was on the edge of being swallowed by a black hole?
oO Fools... Oo
Tobrak: Elder. I am Tobrak, Security advisor to Chief Minister Zishi. I have orders to bring you to the him, please follow me. Your friends can remain here...
glanced at Drex for a moment, and the Denobulan frowned. In her expression, he thought he could almost read confusion. Drex felt a cold weight settle in his thoughts.
Verrla: You do have me at a disadvantage. I have not heard of a Cheif Minister named Zishi. To which people is he the chief minister of?
She did not know this minister, could it be a coup in the city-ship? Was the incident not an incident after all?
Drex bit his lower lip, his eyes fixed on the Voth who called himself Tobrak. It was not the moment to begin the usual Starfleet mantra about non-interference in internal civil disputes. Hopefully, there would be time for that, once the weapons were no longer pointed at them and attention had shifted elsewhere.
Avariswal / Mensah / Tobrak : Response
Verrla: The others are officers of the Federation and were invited here by the Igirni’s Council of Elders. Therefore they are under my protection. If they were to remain here while I left with you, could you guarantee that they would remain unharmed and able to return to their ship unmolested.
Drex: We’ve come aboard to help your people restart the engine and avoid the black hole. You’re still in danger. Please, we need to work together to save the ship and its population.
Avariswal / Mensah / Tobrak : Response
At Tobrak’s words, Drex went pale. So his instincts had been right: they had crossed the horizon event and ended up somewhere else. But where? And the Eagle? No, the Eagle was far from this danger, still in the original sector. How far away, though?
Drex’s heart began to pound. He swallowed hard, though there was nothing to ease the tension in his throat, trying to force himself to stay calm.
oO It happened before, and you made it safe home. Breathe and think. There must be a way out this time, too. Oo
Drex: What... How... ::He swallowed again.::Where are we now?
Avariswal / Mensah / Tobrak / Verrla: Response
Drex felt his legs threaten to give out, but somehow he managed to stay on his feet. How many installations did Starfleet have in this quadrant? How many of them were close enough to provide support? And how could they send a distress call to ensure someone actually received it?
oO Stop making counts! You’re the First Officer, not the last of the ensigns. People are counting on you! Oo
Drex: I’m Lieutenant Commander Drex, First Officer of the USS Eagle, from the United Federation of Planets. I am second-in-command of my unit, and I request an audience with your Minister.
Avariswal / Mensah / Tobrak / Verrla: Response
Drex: We’ve lost contact with our Captain right after the Igirni was swallowed by the black hole. There was no intention for that to happen on our part. We did not want to invade your sector. There are Federation installations in the Delta Quadrant—we only want to reach one of them.
Was it enough to convince Tobrak? He did not seem the kind of person who liked to talk. On the contrary, Drex would have bet he was simply waiting for an excuse to shoot them all. But, thanks to the heavens, something was holding him back from doing it.
