((Sickbay - Deep Space 224))

Periodic medical checkups were something Drex rarely missed. Routine was steady ground, and he had always been good at following the rules. So stepping back into the station’s sickbay a few days after his release from hibernation did not trouble him.
Normally he did not care who examined him, if anything, he preferred to avoid telepaths altogether, but this time he had looked specifically for Lim. Maybe he still felt guilty over how poorly he had handled their first meeting or maybe he simply wanted to see her after the mission.
The mission. Its weight still sat somewhere behind his ribs, knowing of those who had not returned to their own time. And yet...  he felt lighter. A week of small mercies: the energy restored by his hibernation, the relief of knowing those he cared about were safe at home, and Adea’s unexpected trust in him.
Whatever the mix of reasons, he felt steady enough, steady enough to face a Betazoid’s quiet insight, and to tell Lim how much he appreciated her help aboard the Bounty.

Drex: It’s more than that. :: A small smile curved his lips :: How are you holding up now?

She kneeled and picked up Mue and held him up to her shoulder. He draped himself there with practiced ease, something Drex interpreted as his preferred spot.

Lim: Really, really glad to be back in our own time.

Drex: I think that can be said for all of us.

Lim: Everyone made it back with no new permanent medical issues or disabilities. ::She leaned back against one of the spare beds:: Which is some kind of victory I suppose.

The Denobulan knew how hard it had been to survive for so many weeks with such insufficient equipment. And Medical were those in the worst situation.

Drex: Considering what you had to work with, I’d say you did more than “suppose”. :: He placed his hands on the edge of the bed and pushed himself to his feet. :: What about what you left on the Eagle?

Lim: ::Shrugging::  It’s easy to say it’s just stuff... I’m just glad I didn’t lose anything that I was emotionally attached to.

Mue chittered softly and rubbed against her cheek, and Drex found himself watching the small gesture longer than he meant to.

Drex: That’s something, at least. ::He exhaled slowly, a faint nod accompanying the words.:: Losing the Eagle is...  a lot. But losing a piece of yourself on top of it? Glad that didn’t happen.

He was not sure she could tell, but he meant it more personally than he usually allowed himself to sound. For a moment, he let the silence settle. In the months since their first, awkward meeting, he had come to respect her. And he was unexpectedly relieved that the things she cared about had made it through with her.
He cleared his throat, pushing down the self-consciousness that tried to rise.

Drex: And...  :: He pointed to Mue, realizing he did not know the name of the little pet. :: It seems pretty relieved too. ::A small, genuine smile tugged at his lips.::

Lim: Response

Drex’s eyes lifted slightly as he took a careful step closer, not enough to crowd her, but enough to get a better look.

Drex: Mue. I saw the two of you on the planet. What is he exactly? Some kind of...  shoulder-dwelling morale officer?

Lim: Response

Drex nodded slowly, the explanation settling into place with surprising ease.

Drex: That actually makes sense. Can he sense others too? I mean...  :: he lifted a hand, vaguely indicating the space around them:: should I be worried he’s judging me right now?

Lim: Response
