((Holodeck 13 - Deep Space 224))
The holodeck was an amazing invention. Not just the technology aspect, but the recreational aspect that it offered up. One could literally recreate anything that the mind could dream up. Jackson often recreated deliberate outdoor experiences. Scenes where he could be in nature and experience the outdoor world. It kept him sane and made the endless days and nights aboard a space bound vessel manageable.
Today he had organised a hike through the Cradle Mountains in Tasmania, Australia. Carved by Glaciers of an age ago, the dramatic cliffs and lakes make for splendid viewing. Well, that’s how Jackson understood it. This would be his first time.
He had dressed appropriately in good solid shoes, sensible shirt and a hat. Even though he could set the holodeck to make him not have harmful UV rays, he felt it important to still dress as though it’s a real setting. Entering into the Holodeck, Jackson took a few moments to orient himself.
oO Is that the Doctor? Oo
Jackson wasn’t entirely sure how he’d managed to waltz into someone else’s but at this very moment, it didn’t much matter. He was standing there, unsure what to do other than to embrace the moment. He decided to let the fact that he missed his shot go unsaid.
Letek: Good morning.
Tanner: Lieutenant, I didn’t know you enjoyed golf?
He rested the club on the grass and leaned on it, in possibly the most golf move he’d ever seen.
Letek: I used to enjoy playing golf during my academy days, but I haven't had a chance to play since I was assigned to the Eagle.
Tanner: Not finding enough time to pursue one’s interest is probably a pretty common complaint.
Jackson cast a look around. Attempting to figure out if this was his program and the good Doctor was intruding. But the fact they were on an actual golf course tended to imply it was Jackson who was at fault. The Doctor is clearly able to read Jackson’s confusion.
Letek: Have I exceeded my holodeck time, or did you get the wrong door?
Tanner: It’s becoming exceedingly likely to me that it’s a combination of the door allowing me entry and me not checking appropriately if it was in fact the right door. ::Turning to face him.:: I am truly sorry to interrupt. ::Jackson began a slow turn to exit.::
Letek: Response
Tanner: ::Mulling it over.:: Are you sure? I am definitely intruding.
Letek: Response
Tanner: I’m not too sure about that. I’ve played a little and I understand the fundamentals. But working out where to control where the ball goes, is an entirely different thing.
Having now resigned to joining the Lieutenant, Jackson summoned himself some golf clubs. It had been some time for him. He never really considered himself a player, but he did like to try a bunch of different things. Golf had made the list a couple of times over his life. He truly wasn’t ever very capable. Striking it was no problem. It was generally the landing.
Letek: Response
Tanner: We can just continue if you’d like. I’m mostly just keen to have a hit and enjoy the outdoors. ::Watching as he took stock of what next.:: You were about to take a shot, yes?
Letek: Response
What had caused the initial confusion for Jackson was the rather cliff-like setting the Lieutenant had created. A feature similar to Jackson's intended setting made the idea to stay here not such a compromise.
