(The Market – Deck 358, Voth Generation Ship Igirni))
The commotion caused by the Starfleet officers' words was fortunately eased by Elder Verrla. Drex looked at her with a measure of admiration. It was clear her people respected her, and the calm authority with which she settled the crowd was something he envied. He had never been comfortable in crowds, and an agitated crowd was even worse.
As the Voths calmed down, the group began to move forward.
Drex: Do you have any recreational areas? What do your people do in their free time?
Verrla: There are many recreation areas. We have parks, sporting areas, libraries and theaters.
Avariswal: Response?
Mensah: Interesting, and how do you keep children occu…
The Denobulan First Officer walked among the Saurus in clear discomfort. He was not truly afraid, but past experiences pressed at the edges of his thoughts, shaping his reactions more than he would have liked: without fully realizing it, he quickened his pace.
A group of women shifted around him, closing the gap, and Drex found himself separated from Verrla and the rest of his team. He slowed, scanning the wall of bodies for an opening, but found none.
Drex stopped completely, forcing himself not to push or force his way through the crowd. He turned slightly, trying to reorient himself toward where he had last seen Verrla and the others, but the movement around him made it difficult to find them.
The crowd pressed in a little closer. The Denobulan took a steadying breath, trying to push down the rising discomfort and keep his focus on rejoining the others. Instinctively, his hand moved to his commbadge, but it was not there.
Drex: Letek! Avariswal! Where are you? ::The first trace of panic slipping through.::
With his heart in his throat, caught in the flow of the crowd moving through the market, Drex tried to see beyond the wall of taller saurians around him. His head turned left and right, searching for a familiar face while fighting the growing feeling that he was being carried farther away from his companions.
He hated crowds.
oO You can't swim against the current; you have to ride it. Breathe and find your way to the shore. Oo
His father's words cut through the fog of anxiety creeping into his thoughts.
Drex forced himself to look beyond the people surrounding him. Over the heads of the Voth, he spotted the nearest wall. Instead of resisting the flow, he began moving with it, gradually making his way in that direction while trying to steady his breathing.
oO You are a Denobulan among a hundred thousand Voth; they will find you. Oo
Drex: ::Very quietly, to himself:: I know... but there are too many people here.
The Denobulan finally reached the wall and stepped out of the crowd. He placed his hand on the cold, metal surface, finding comfort. He took a couple of deep breaths, then pivoted and, keeping his shoulders against the wall, returned to observing the multitude. It was difficult to orient himself in the vast room; he hadn't paid particular attention to any particular signs when they entered. Now, fear was showing him symbols and directions that he could not interpret. He shifted his gaze, analyzing the stalls, what little of them was visible.
oO We know we followed the crowd. Oo
Drex: If I follow the wall backwards... but we were much more central.
oO But we'd find the corridor that brought us here. Oo
Drex: I shouldn't have lost my badge...
oO You shouldn't have lost the others either... don't you have the PADD? Oo
Drex slapped his forehead, then felt his belt and pockets: his tricorder and his PADD were still there. He exhaled and pulled out his tricorder. He tapped it open, and the device quickly picked up nearby Starfleet comm signals. He paired it with his PADD and typed a quick message.
Drex: =/\= Letek, I’m at the edge of the market by a wall. I’m moving clockwise along the perimeter to find you. Go to the closest wall. =/\=
Avariswal / Letek / Mensah / Verrla: Response
Keeping close to the wall, Drex ignored the curious stares of the Voth he passed along the way, and began retracing his steps, carefully working his way back through the market to rejoin his group.
Drex: =/\= I lost my commbadge, scan for a Denobulan biosign =/\=
Avariswal / Letek / Mensah / Verrla: Response
The walk felt like it lasted hours. Focusing on the tricorder display helped Drex avoid thinking too much about where he was and how many people surrounded him.
Gradually, the signals grew stronger. He lifted his eyes and finally spotted Letek—and the rest of the group beside him.
A small smile broke through his tension, and he quickened his pace toward them.
Drex: Sorry, there were some very nice necklaces over there.::He tried to make light of it::
Avariswal / Letek / Mensah / Verrla: Response
