((A secluded beach on Bolarus IX))
Drex had welcomed the stop on Bolarus with a deep sense of relief and was doing his best to spend as much time planetside as possible. If he had not been the First Officer, he likely would have slept on the surface as well. He doubted he would ever truly grow accustomed to life aboard a starship.
He missed the view through real windows. His murals and holographic micro-projectors were a poor substitute for the vistas he had once enjoyed from his apartment in Soldotna tower, and from the home he had nearly finished on the cliffs near Denali Station. And he missed the scent of the ocean. However flawless, the holodeck could never truly recreate the fragrance of the sea.
So that morning, after confirming that his presence on board was not essential and making sure his commbadge was charged and in his pocket, he had beamed down to one of the countless beaches he had yet to explore.
Dressed in bermuda shorts, a light shirt, he walked along the shoreline barefoot. As the sun climbed higher, warming the air, he slipped off his shirt, rolled it into a loose bundle, and dropped it onto the sand. He studied the surface of the sea for a moment, then took a deep breath and moved toward the water. He waded in until it reached his thighs before diving forward, letting himself be enveloped by the quiet of the underwater world. He resurfaced several meters out, rolling onto his back and allowing the gentle current to carry him, eyes closed. He had no desire to swim, only to let the calm of the water seep into his body and mind.
When the chill began to bite, he turned back toward shore, moving with slow, unhurried strokes. By then, the sun had climbed higher, taking the edge off the air. Retrieving his shirt, Drex used it to dry his face, smiling as the scent of salt filled his senses. He shook his head, scattering droplets of seawater from his short curls. As he resumed walking, his gaze drifted between the horizon and the beach, watching the waves break with deliberate slowness along the shore, then the occasional Bolian or tourist seeking the same quiet solitude. He passed a figure lying on a wide towel without much thought, but stopped almost immediately, realizing he recognized him.
He turned and retraced his steps, halting just long enough for his shadow to fall across the young Bajoran doctor. It took only a few seconds for Lieutenant Letek to open his eyes, clearly annoyed by the sudden loss of light and warmth. Drex remained silent, a hint of amusement in his smile, as the other man raised a hand to shield his eyes, trying to make out the teasing silhouette standing against the sun.
Letek: Commander! I was just wondering who turned off the light.
The Denobulan chuckled and took a step on the side.
Drex: Good morning, Doctor.
Elor sat up from his reclining position.
Letek: An entire planet, and we meet on this remote beach. What are the odds?
Drex: Oh, I wouldn’t call it chance. I ran a full sensor sweep before beaming down—biosigns, heat signatures, the whole thing. Had to make sure you weren’t slacking off, Lieutenant. ::He tilted his head slightly, letting the silence linger just long enough before his facade cracked into a wider smile.:: All right... not quite. I picked a random stretch of sand and got lucky.
Elor shifted slightly to the side and patted the now-empty spot next to him.
Letek: Why don’t you sit down and keep me company? Or do you have other plans?
Drex: That depends... ::he glanced down at the spot, then back at him faintly amused:: Am I being invited as your First Officer, or as Drex? ::A brief pause, before continuing.:: Because if it’s the former, I’ll have to pretend I’ve got something more important to do. ::Another beat while a warmer smile curved his lips.:: But if you can promise me it’s just Drex you’re asking to stay, no ranks, no Commander, then I think I can be persuaded.
Letek: Response
The Denobulan gave a small, satisfied nod. He stepped closer, letting his shirt slip from his hand onto the sand beside the towel before lowering himself to sit, stretching his legs out and leaning back on his hands. For a moment, he simply breathed, eyes drifting toward the horizon
Drex: You picked well.
Letek: Response
The Denobulan watched a wave roll in and dissolve against the shore, unhurried, as if time itself had decided to slow down here. A faint smile tugged at his lips. He turned his head slightly toward Letek, the expression softening into something more relaxed than usual.
Drex: Lately I’ve started to forget that quiet like this exists. ::A brief pause as he inhaled deeply:: How are you doing, Letek?
Letek: Response
