They were discussing Kim's transfer and the rationale behind it.  Kim herself was quite sure her transfer had not been a disciplinary one.

Kettick: The chance to explore new horizons, then? Find new answers, and new questions to ask?

Stapledon: Well, science has lots of interesting questions. Believe it or not though, I graduated the academy as an engineer. With a philosophy minor.

Kettick: An interesting combination. I will remember it the next time we have to deal with a sentient computer program.

Kim snorted.

Stapledon:  Well in my experience there's usually a lot of checks and balances to prevent that but still...

Kettick: It has been known to happen. Sadly, the only computer programming skill I am wholly fluent in is soldering. More to the point, did you need to come back to the Academy to qualify as a Science officer, or did it happen... how did you say, organically?

This was ironic but not unheard of.  Kim's engineering skill had been the exact opposite.  Her skill with computer programming had been the most remarked on, while her skill with anything involving dexterity had been acceptable.

Stapledon:  For me?  It was a pretty organic process.  Never really thought of taking more coursework...  Maybe I should someday.  Have you ever upgraded your training with something like the academy again?

Kettick: It's possible, especially if the Captain considers that it will serve the needs of the ship. For instance, I took some time off my first tour on Eagle to pursue and additional qualification as a Security officer back when I was an Ensign. :: He shrugged :: Every hostile we encountered seemed to make Engineering a priority target, and I wanted to cut down response times.

Kim nodded, trying to be careful not to bring too much humour into matters of ship's history until she knew more of the full story.

Stapledon:  Did it help?

Kettick:  Response

She mused out loud.

Stapledon:  I was checking on my padd during the trip and it sounds like there are some microcourses in the educational facilities on the station.

Kettick:  Response

Stapledon:  I like to think so.  But biology is my weakest.

Kettick:  Response

Stapledon:  Oh?  What was that like?

Kettick:  Response
