Avariswal knew that captains mostly did things by the book, but there could be nuances in reports or experiences that didn’t always make it to the official records. Most interesting so far was what she had read about a Q. She knew of them, but she was glad they had never crossed her path before. They would no doubt be the ultimate test for any diplomat.

Adea: Not off the top of my head, why is there something you’re worried about?

Avariswal: Worried? Well, that’s a good one. I think worried is a bit overstated, but I have to admit I was intrigued to read about your experience with a Q. I believe that makes you quite unique. Not many ships or captains have encountered them. And I wonder, in a way, what that was like. Must have been a real challenge?

Genkos ran a tongue over his teeth, apparently mentioning the Q entity meant something to him.

Adea: It was, frankly, as close to the four hells as I have any desire to get to.

Avariswal: I have to admit there is a part of me that wished I had been there. For the experience, but based on what I’ve read, I guess I am lucky I didn’t have to spend weeks on a desert world, hoping for a way back.

Adea: Stay aboard long enough, I am certain CloQ will return. They’re like the human proverbial bad coin - they keep turning up.

Now she WAS worried. She meant it when she said you might like the thrill of the ride. But that was knowing everything turned out alright. To actually face this Q again, not knowing what the outcome would be, made her feel sick again.

Avariswal: Right…

Adea: I’ve encountered them aboard three separate vessels - they seem to have a particular fascination with myself, Addison and Kalianna - I have a sneaking suspicion we were a particular irritant to them on the Resolution, and they’ve made it their business to continue to be so back to us.

Avariswal: I see.

At this point her stomach was really turning and she had a feeling she was going to be sick.

oO Be careful what you wish for apparently is not just silly advice. Out here it’s a real way of life. Oo

Now that she started to feel really unwell, she wanted to end the conversation as quickly as possible. First, and foremost, to avoid throwing up in front of her new CO. And secondly, to find a place to meditate and calm down.

Avariswal: I will make sure I am ready when the time comes, sir.

The words came out more stiffly than she intended. She forced a polite smile, though by now her stomach was twisting violently.

Avariswal: If you’ll excuse me, I think it wise to let you get back to work and for me to catch up on the last bit of reading. Have a good day, sir.

She offered a quick nod before turning away from her new CO and looking for a way out. The first thing she spotted was a turbolift on her left. She didn’t quite run toward it, but it certainly wasn’t a normal walking pace either. As the doors closed behind her, she exhaled sharply and leaned back against the wall while closing her eyes for a moment.

She pressed a hand against her stomach, hoping it would calm down. The thought that this Q was not some isolated incident, but something that might return at any moment, made her feel profoundly small in a universe she had only just begun to explore.

As soon as the elevator reached the ground floor, she hurried outside in search of fresh air.
