((Federation Headquarters Ballroom, Bolarus IX))
As with every awards ceremony, Drex had not been particularly enthusiastic when the announcement of the mission awards had reached him.
This time, however, his attendance as First Officer was required. The only way he could avoid it was to be ill. However, Drex was not good at faking symptoms.
He had reached the ballroom at the Federation Headquarters alone. The room had been elegantly set up, but without excess.
Looking around the room, the Denobulan recognized some of the crew members already gathered around the food and beverage tables, but his attention was drawn by the Science Officer who entered just now.
During shore leave, he had not had many opportunities to talk to the Galadoran, so he decided that now was the right time to catch up.
Drex: I see. And how was your shore leave?
The Denobulan had studied many cultures over the years and had learned about a wide range of communication styles and peculiarities, from Zaldan aggressiveness to Vulcan impassibility. Yet the sight of Gnai’s many arms moving within his tank reminded him of an old passage he had once read about a small subculture on Earth whose members emphasized their speech with an abundance of gestures.
Gnai: Mostly fine. This spent a good deal of it on the ship, with one minor excursion to the surface.
Of course, Drex knew that the Galadoran had spent many hours in the laboratories. Even if he was no longer assigned to the Science Department, he still lingered around the section, continuing to work on several long-standing projects he was not yet ready to abandon. Given the abundance of water on Bolarus, however, Drex found it somewhat surprising that Gnai had not taken advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a little freedom from his mechanical suit.
Drex: I thought Bolarus might be of some interest to you.
He was about considering to ask more, when the Chief Science Officer probably saved him from probably playing the part of the fool, ignorant young Denobulan.
Stapledon: Oh hey.
Gnai: Hello, sir.
The First Officer partially turned to welcome the woman.
Drex: Good evening, Lieutenant. ::He bowed his head slightly, a polite smile curving his lips::
Stapledon: Good to meet you outside of a... dicey situation. ::Smiling::
Drex glanced at the stage for a moment. It was not properly dicey, but not the most pleasant either.
Gnai: This agrees. The mission was fairly tense. And confusing.
The Denobulan’s eyebrow raised and his gaze returned to Gnai. Confusing was definitely one way to describe it, and perhaps a more diplomatic one than most.
Drex: I think 'confusing' is a pretty charitable way to describe it.::His smile widened::
Stapledon: Response
Gnai: How were both of your leaves?
Drex: I've had some nice excursions, Bolarus is an interesting planet. You, Lieutenant?
Stapledon: Response
Gnai: This somewhat... avoided the beaches of Bolarus, under the assumption that they would be quite crowded.
Drex understood the concern. He had never been particularly fond of crowded places himself.
Drex: Some are, but as Doctor Letek can confirm, there are several secluded beaches.
Stapledon: Response
Gnai: It will be nice to set off again...
Drex: I believe most of the crew would agree with you.
Stapledon: Response
Drex began to gesture toward the nearby tables, but stopped midway for a moment, considering the Galadorna physiology.
Drex: Mind if I go get something to drink? Would you like to come with me?
Gnai / Stapledon: Response
With no hurry, Drex moved toward the refreshment tables scanning the arrangements. He came to a stop near the edge of the table and let his gaze settle over the selection.
Drex: The blue-toned dishes are usually marinated kelp-based appetizers, lightly seasoned and served chilled. ::His eyes shifted slightly over other trays.:: hose pastries often contain herb fillings... ::He finally looked at some jugs of colored liquid:: I have not idea what those are, but I liked the bluish color.
Gnai / Stapledon: Response
The Denobulan had a glass poured from the bluish pitcher after placing a few appetizers on a small plate. He turned slightly toward the science officers.
Drex: So, what do you hope for the next mission? ::He took a sip, then frowned slightly as he tried to make sense of the taste.:: Personally I would love to run into some ancient ruins.
Gnai / Stapledon: Response
