((Engineering - Underground Facility - Large Chamber behind Door with Tubes ))
Alex was not the kind of man to give in, but at this point he had truly had enough. He wanted to go home and get this over with.
Stapledon: Generating chemical energy... maybe.. Could be partly how the animals are getting produced -- or at least fed -- inside this place.
Tholin kept his wheelchair locked at an angle that gave him the best coverage the room. He didn’t like the way the floor vibration had started to change, something was wrong.
ch’Clex: Lieutenant, perhaps we should speed thing up. I’m hearing things.
Stapledon glanced up from her scans, uncertain.
Stapledon: Something we haven't seen yet, I assume?
Williams: Lets see… what could be next. A Tyrannosaurus would be nice for the records.
Tholin’s antennae angled forward, catching a faint scrape through the hum, like metal rubbing against metal.
ch’Clex: Something we haven’t seen yet, yes. And I’d prefer we keep it that way.
Stapledon: If I can get into the main assembly again, I should be able to short the intermix connectors again and cause a thermal overload. We'll need to leave quickly after I've done it, though.
ch’Clex: Do it. And I would to it fast, something is coming.
Williams: What he said… Make it happen, we’ll cover you.
Stapledon: The maintenance hatch is clear.
A phaser shot was fired and something metal clanked on the floor. If anyone was there, they would be with them in seconds.
Stapledon: I can see the intermix connector, I just need to--
A dull thump hit the enclosure wall behind them.
Alex looked up and gasped for air for a moment. He hadn’t noticed the wall before, only now realising it was a massive tank filled with a huge water monster that was trying to break free.
Williams: Jikes! Oh my….
The first response was because of the looks of whatever was in there. The second for the cracking of metal from the ceiling and the sudden arrival of an old friend.
ch’Clex: That’s the animal we put down. ::A beat, bitter:: They didn’t stay down. Of course they didn’t.
It was a lot of trouble to handle. The breaking of the container would probably solve the power problem. But would probably kill them too. Afterall water and leaking electricity wouldn’t do well for any of them.
And then there was their bear friend, who somehow refused to stay down.
Lim: ::Aggravated:: Are we ever going to get a break?
ch’Clex: Bring the dampening field down, Lieutenant, we will cover you.
ch’Clex: Commander didn’t you kill and cripple that thing?
Williams: I did… You might want to explain to it, that it should not be moving…
Lim: Given what happened to your leg I don’t think killing or crippling does much here.
oO We need to vaporize it. Oo
Alex set his phaser to maximum, hoping it would be enough. He couldn’t get a clear shot and move out of harm’s way at the same time. With some distance still between them, he looked for more defensible ground first.
ch’Clex: We got to hold it of Kim…
With himself in a better position, Alex started to fire. He hit it, but it didn’t seem to work. The creature was still there, roaring in fury.
Lim: Keep going, it’s weakening!
Williams: It should be vaporized!
More shots were fired. Alex wondered how many it would take — and whether the power cells would hold.
The urge to skin it was gone. Once it was down, he wanted to be nowhere near it. The idea that even the skin might haunt him in his office was too much of a risk.
After at least two more direct hits on full power the bear finally gave in. But even now, it did not vaporise. It just fell on its paws, like it had done before.
Williams: I don’t want a third round with it… We barely made it out of this one.
Alex wanted to look at the tank again, to see how that situation was developing, but he didn’t have to. The sound of a structure breaking was more than enough information.
oO And this is how it’s going to end then… Oo
Then a sharp sound reached Alex. The lights started to dim for a moment.
oO Something is wrong with the power output… KIM! She did it! Oo
Tholin’s combadge chirped, alive again. He did not waste any time and reached for it, while Alex looked at the tank.
ch’Clex: =/= Eagle! Lock on our signals, Emergency beam-out, now! =/=
Nothing happened. And with a large set of tentacles coming for them, Alex aimed his phaser again. As he took position, he could also hear the bear preparing itself for round three, and another bang from somewhere close probably meant Mr. Giraffe was on his way to join the party.
oO I wonder how Starfleet will explain this to my parents when they find me… If they find me. Oo
As he thought about his parents, he hoped God and the Prophets would take care of his family in his absence. Then, as if in answer to his silent prayer, something heavenly engulfed him. A transporter beam pulled him away from death’s doorstep and took him where he wanted to be — or at least close. It wasn’t his parents’ house, but sickbay aboard the USS Eagle felt just as good at that moment.
oO We made it… Oo
Stapledon: ::Reflexively:: Is everyone alive?
Williams: Thanks to you, Lieutenant. Remind me to put you forward for a medal once this is over. ::He then turned to the others: That goes for all of you. You did exceptionally well.
Lim/Ch,Clex: Response (if any)
End of Act 3 for Alex, although happy to backsim our arrival if others want to.
