Noemi huffed and sat back in her chair. Living nebulas were a thing, she couldn’t deny the scientific reports even if it felt like it defied the laws of nature. On the other hand she wasn’t certain it was a good use of their time to spend it looking for zebras rather than horses. Or at least at this point in their investigation.

Lim: I mean, I’m not super convinced either way yet and I’m not certain how much it matters in regards to protecting ourselves from the same things happening again.

Drex: If it’s not alive, remodulating the shield frequencies should be enough to get us through without harm, but if this thing is alive, if it has intent, then it will find a way to bypass our defenses and reach us again. ::He drew in a slow, deep breath.:: I’m not exactly eager to test either theory firsthand... but we might not have to. We could send a probe instead and analyze its response. Might be time to bring engineering into the loop.

Lim: Unleash the probes instead of us then?

Drex: Let the probe take the risk. If we’re right, if there’s intelligence in that nebula, it’ll react. Maybe even try to talk. But we’ll need the engineers to harden the probe against the same frequency exposure that affected us. :: He tapped his badge ::

Drex: =/\= Drex to Commander Kettick. We’re working with a developing hypothesis that may require a specialized probe configuration. Are you available to join us at the SOS lab? =/\=

Kettick: =/\= On my way. =/\=

Lim: That was quick.

Drex: I don’t even know if they will authorize us… to launch the probe we need to get close to the Killipaartalik Nebula again.

Lim: Maybe we can get our hands on one of the long range probes? Like the ones Humanity sent out when they were first exploring the solar neighborhood that they never expected to get back?

Her knowledge of probe tech was almost entirely limited to the kinds that go into inside of people, the micro to the marco as it were. Still it made sense to her that there would be probes or some other kind of device that a spaceship could shoot out to go somewhere far away.

They thankfully didn’t have long to wait for Kettick to show up.

Kettick: Lieutenant, Ensign. What can Engineering do for you today?

Lim: Probing suggestions. ::She giggled a bit to herself once she realized how that sounded. : We’re trying to investigate the nebula without actually going into the nebula again.

Drex: Response

Kettick: Adaptive configuration of the probe aside, we would have to make sure that it does not lose power and shut down as soon as it reaches the edge of the nebula.

Lim: I’m assuming we can’t shield it like we did the Eagle?

That would be too easy wouldn’t it?

Drex: Response

Kettick: What about something like a modified listening buoy? Have it send signals towards the heart of the nebula from a distance, and see what comes back?

Lim: How much information would we be able to get from it? If it’s not much more than we already have then I don’t think it would be useful.

Drex/Kettick: Response

Lim: Something that could pick up infrasound and I’d say something that could read the electromagnetic spectrum and chemical make up if that’s possible?

She ticked off her suggestions on her fingers.

Drex/Kettick: Response

Lim: Elor had a theory that the nebula might be a living one.
