Thalor: ::Dryly:: They neglected that part of my training much to my detriment. :: He shook his head and scoffed.:: In fact I do not think my professors had ever conceived having to operate in circumstances such as this, nor the wrecked sickbay I was left to deal with on the Proust.
It had been quite the opposite in fact. When he’d been a shiny eyed medical student he’d been sold on clean and state of the art hospitals and operating rooms where he would be working on cybernetic and biological enhancements to his patients forms, bringing them one step closer to transcending mortality as Cantavi had done.
And then the borg came, derailing everything.
Adea: I guess that’s Starfleet’s job, Doctor.
He sighed.
Thalor: So it seems.
They approached one of the patients, one of the officers who had been mauled by one of the lizards. The officer let out a soft moan, presumably of pain, as they walked past.
Adea: Can we afford to give them more painkillers, doctor?
Severan frowned, picking up the paper record of the patient’s treatment to remind himself when the patient had last had any painkillers and how much the dose was. He put the paper back and then pulled out his tricorder and ran it over the patient and checked the results.
Thalor: ::Shaking his head sadly:: Not yet. They have another half an hour before they can be given another dose. The risk of overdose or other complications are too high.
If they had been in a modern medical facility the patient would have been hooked up to monitoring equipment and an automatic dispensary that would feed the patient medication intravenously based on real time measurements. The tricorders helped, but they still required manually running the scan.

As much as he disliked denying his patients relief, it must have been more difficult for the empathic Betazoid.
Thalor: These are among the worst parts of being a doctor. I still have yet to get used to them.
