(( Inside cave complex, 1 hour away from the main compound ))
They had continued along through the cave and had come to a split in the path. Drex’s scans showed an increase in temperature in one direction and bones in another. Noemi wasn’t picking up anything intelligent nearby. And so they were left with a decision on what direction to take.
Lim: No other changes? Just temperature?
If it was only temperature that could indicate the passage led to the surface rather than some kind of geothermal source.
Williams: It's safe to assume that a higher temperature means it's closer to the outside. Right?
Drex: Response
ch’Clex: Yes sir, the temperature should increase as we get closer to the surface.
Lim: I vote for continuing in the direction that doesn’t lead to bones.
Going in that direction didn’t seem like a good idea in general. The last thing they needed was to stumble across some creature's nest.
Williams: Well… if the bones are in the direction of the increased temperature, it further strengthens the idea it's the way out. An animal or humanoid that would eat its kill would not drag it deeper into a cave after all. It would leave it somewhat close to the entrance. Especially if it is all alone here…
ch’Clex: If we stay on our toes, we should be able to handle what we might run in to.
Drex: Response
Lim: ::Off handedly:: I am a bit surprised that there aren’t more animals hiding away from the heat down here.
Most of the creatures she’d seen were reptile-like so maybe they were coldblooded and liked being out and about in the heat.
Williams: They could have adjusted to it. Or find shelter deep in the dunes. There are many earth animals that found ways to deal with the heat and sunlight. They sleep during the day and come out at night.
ch’Clex: I believe you are right their Commander.
Lim: :: Nodding :: That’s why I was surprised stumbled across any.
Drex: Response
Williams: Well… at the risk of owing you all a drink or two when I am wrong… I’d say we go for the warmer tunnel and hope we find a way out there.
ch’Clex: I agree with you their Commander, we need to find a way out.
Lim: It’s the more likely option given what we know at the moment.
Drex: Response
Williams: I respect that opinion, I really do, but we don’t have the time. There are people counting on us. We can spend an hour theorizing what its best, but in the end, it would still be a bit of a gamble anyway.
ch’Clex: Yes sir!
She gave Alex a thumbs up, though how obvious it was in the dim lighting was unclear.
Drex: Response
Williams: ::Alex looked at Ch’Clex:: If you want, I can take point for a while? I know how much concentration and focus it takes, after all. You can give your senses a bit of rest while taking the rear.
ch’Clex: No it will be fine, we are out cave climbing now. There is path to follow, so you don’t need me up point anymore. I will take up the rear commander.
Lim: I’ll stay where I am then.
Drex: Response
ch’Clex: ::keeping a steady pace behind the team, antennae flicking:: Airflow is getting stronger, Commander. We’re closing on the surface.
Lim: I’m still not picking up anything nearby though there are creatures at a distance.
Another sign that they were nearing the surface she supposed.
Drex / Williams: Response
ch’Clex: ::low voice, steady:: Commander… we’re being shadowed. Something’s following us.
Frowning, she threw her senses wide.
Lim: I’m not feeling anything.
Drex / Williams: Response
The scrape came first chitin against stone, then the rush of air as something burst from the shadows. Multi-legged, fast, mandibles clicking as it lunged straight down the tunnel.
ch’Clex: ::snaps his phaser up, firing a burst:: Contact rear!
The beam slashed across its carapace, forcing it to veer left. It skittered along the wall with terrifying speed, angling to charge them again.
Noemi scrambled back and to the side to give herself and the others space to fire without worrying about hitting her before pulling out her own phaser.
Lim: ::Alarmed:: I can’t feel that thing at all!
Drex / Williams / ch’Clex: Response
Lim: It looks like a centipede. Possibly venomous, don’t let it bite you..
She fired her phaser at it, hitting it in the back legs and was rewarded with a squeal. Whether it was of pain, anger or a mix of both Noemi was unsure.
Drex / Williams / ch’Clex: Response
