((Security and Tactical Area, Deck 2, USS Eagle-A))
The briefing with ch'Clex had reached a natural point for Tomas to take off his intelligence hat and don his StratOps hat to ask the lieutenant about tactical readiness. Tomas shifted on his chair slightly and lowered his PADD. It was the kind of question he'd
have previously direct to Williams, so he was interested to see how ch'Clex would respond.
Falt: Changing the subject slightly, as the Strategic Operations Officer for the sector block it's my job to make sure all Starfleet assets in the area are appropriately equipped to deal with any threats or situations they might face. From a tactical perspective,
do you have any readiness concerns?
ch'Clex: Nothing immediate.
The Lieutenant lowered his own PADD before continuing.
ch’Clex: Our weapons inventory and launch systems are within acceptable parameters. I have begun reviewing the torpedo readiness reports personally, and so far I have found no fault that would prevent deployment. That said, I would like additional diagnostic
time on the launch assemblies and targeting interface.
Falt: I'd have been worried if the diagnostics had found anything given how recently the ship launched. What about the crew though, it usually takes some time to adjust to a new ship?
There was a brief pause as the Andorian opposite considered that question.
ch’Clex: I would also recommend exercises, especially for non-security personnel.
Tomas raised an eyebrow as Tholin's words prompted him to recalled a conversation with the then Commodore Nicholotti about the danger of assuming everything might be a threat.
Falt: You'll need to create a plan to take to the XO, but are you sure about the non-security personnel?
ch’Clex: They need to be ready, and I believe we should be ready for the situations to become more complicated and more dangerous.
Tomas thought for a moment. The 13th Fleet had been re-established based on the idea that if Starfleet better explored and understood the unknown then they had a better chance of stopping something like Frontier Day happening again. Not through domination,
but through knowledge. The Commodore had been concerned about how easily the fleet's mandate for exploration could be forgotten...
Falt: Complicated for sure, but not everything in the universe is trying to hurt us. A big part of my job is readiness, so I understand your perspective. I'm just not sure we need to have non-security personnel join Tactical drills.
ch'Clex: Response.
Tomas nodded. He completely understood this was Tholin's job. However, he also knew he'd solved far more problems with science, good engineering and diplomacy than he ever had with phaser and torpedoes.
Falt: I'm just offering another perspective for considerarion.
He realised the conversation was at risk of turning too serious so he gave the Lieutenant a bright smile.
Falt: This is your wheel house, not mine. I'll support whatever plan you choose to put in front of the XO. ::pause:: It's really good to see you back on duty, Lieutenant.
ch'Clex: Response
