((On the way to the Ops Warehouse, The USS Eagle Outpost))
After the meeting, the new team, consisting of Commander Kettick, Ensign Buccheri, and Lieutenant JG Letek, made their way to the temporary... well, let's call it the ops warehouse. If you could call a few pieces of wood and sheet metal that. However, it did have a rustic charm, and under different circumstances, the warehouse could have been described as “cozy.”
Elor had not yet met Ensign Buccheri, and since they would probably have more to do with each other in the future, he thought it appropriate to introduce himself formally. With a slight smile on his face, he extended his hand.
Letek: I'm Elor. One of the doctors on the USS Eagle. Nice to meet you.
Buccheri: Response?
He could well imagine that the current situation was still quite overwhelming for the newcomer. Even for him, the situation was overwhelming, and probably even for the captain. This made him all the more convinced that a friendly face could help to integrate Buccheri a little more.
Kettick: Kettick, Engineering. :: He looked up at the two men :: Ready to move?
Letek: I think we have everything we need. I'm ready when you are.
Buccheri: Response?
The journey through the desert was anything but pleasant. Elor was sweating in places he didn't even know you could sweat, the luggage they were carrying was an additional burden, and the general situation was anything but motivating. Actually, it would have been a good moment to start smoking. Unfortunately, they didn't have anything suitable with them that could be used as smoking material.
At least Kettick didn't seem to mind the circumstances much; he happily nibbled on his dried lizard meat and was no less motivated than usual.
Letek: Remmillians seem to be made of different stuff than the rest of us. I'm sweating like never before in my life.
Buccheri: Response?
By the time they reached the market, they would look as if they had been part of the desert for years. A desert people who would come to the market for occasional trade. Presumably, this would work to their advantage, but none of them knew how the social structures in the outpost were organized. Was it an open and lively coming and going? Or were there strict social structures that would make them appear like outsiders?
Slowly it grew dark, and Elor wondered whether they would reach their destination in time or whether it might be better to set up camp and wait until dawn.
Kettick: Ensign Buccheri, I am afraid we will not find any shuttle there to help us on the way back. What do you think one of us stays here with the sled, the other two go scouting, then we rotate to avoid attention? Or do we take the risk to carry it around with us?
Letek: I would volunteer to set up a small camp and take the first watch while you look around.
Elor appreciated that Kettick asked the newcomer how he assessed the situation. He could empathize with Buccheri's situation very well, having been the newcomer himself just a few months ago and probably feeling completely overwhelmed by the situation and this question.
But there was no way he would leave him alone on his first mission. He was probably in better hands at Kettick's side, and Elor could manage on his own in the desert for a few hours.
Buccheri: Response?
Kettick shook his head.
Kettick: We will have to browse for a bit, get a feel for the normal prices our cargo could get us. Then, food, drink, medicine, spare parts. Solar panels or a dew collector and water purificator if we can spring it. Information, above all.
Elor knew what they needed. And he also knew that they would probably not even get half of what they really needed. But they had to at least try.
Letek: The most important thing would be food and drink. We can get by for a while with our makeshift supplies, but there are too many of us to last too long with our improvised resources. I don't think I need to mention that medical supplies are just as important to me.
Buccheri: Response?
Kettick: I am not against it as long as we do not get caught. As far as I am concerned, there is a word for a crewmember who appropriates survival goods from the field by any field necessary, and that is "quartermaster".
Elor nodded in agreement. The market was now visible to the naked eye, and it was best not to set up camp any closer to the settlement than they already were.
Letek: If there are no objections, I would set up camp here, behind this dune. It's a sheltered spot, and we have enough materials to protect ourselves from the elements, at least a little. I'll take care of setting up camp, and you can do the first reconnaissance of the market, if there are no objections, Commander.
Kettick / Buccheri: Response?
Before the two could leave, Elor handed them the medkit.
Letek: Just in case you get into trouble. That way you can hold out until you get back.
Kettick / Buccheri: Response?
