((Captain’s Office, Deck One, USS Eagle-A))
Genkos had a friendly habit of keeping his office doors open, one he was trying to keep alive to this day (although he had a number of close calls when receiving high security calls, which he’d had to hurriedly put on hold before closing the doors). Therefore it wasn’t too much of a surprise when Noemi stuck her head through the door.
Lim: Captain, are you available for a talk?
Genkos put down the PADD he’d been perusing and gestured to the seat in front of him.
Adea: Please, come in.
Noemi made her way into the offered chair and sat down, smoothing her uniform and arranging her labcoat to help settle herself. He picked up the pot on his desk and poured a second mug of the uttaberry green tea he was keeping warm on his desk. Pushing it across the desk to her, he raised an eyebrow.
Adea: What can I do for you, Lieutenant?
Lim: I had some personal career questions and since you were a chief medical officer before going into command I figured you were the best person to ask.
Genkos could tell she was nervous, so he pressed a button on his desk to close the doors, and turned the Betazoid relaxation music down. Some species found the discordant notes a little fractious, so now it was barely audible. As it seemed to be one of those conversations, he leaned back in his chair, and tried to exude a relaxed and open posture.
Adea: Fire away, Noemi.
Lim: Did you like being the CMO at all? Did you want the position?
Genkos cast his mind back when he first became CMO of the Gorkon, all those years ago. He’d received the role a little earlier than expected or planned due to the departure of his predecessor, and close friend, Yiggtissi. The Saurian gentle giant had been an excellent mentor when it came to knowing how to be CMO, and Genkos had tried to emulate him as much as possible.
Adea: Desperately. I even pushed back against acting as an XO or even CO, preferring the blue coat. I was CMO aboard half a dozen vessels in the last decade or so, and I loved every minute of it. But I suspect, ::he raised a slender forefinger:: I suspect you don’t.
Lim: ::Softly:: I wasn’t ever interested in being the CMO, but thought that once I’d get used to things I’d like the position, but that’s not the case. Kinda the opposite actually.
Genkos nodded his head, and placed his mug on the desk. Pushing a curl behind his ear, he leaned forward to adopt a more serious posture and tone.
Adea: And what is it that you’re not enjoying?
Lim: Mostly that I don’t have as much time actually doing medical stuff. ::She huffed:: I spend it doing things like paperwork or shift schedules.
A soft exhalation of amusement emitted from the Captain and his hands shrugged.
Adea: That’s fair. I have two secrets for you that might… ::he waggled that forefinger:: sweeten the role for you.
Lim: Response
Adea: The first is delegation, delegation, delegation. Pick some officers, and give them some of the busy work you don’t like doing. If you don’t want to do shift rotations, give them to an assistant. I never liked doing stocktakes, so I made Kyle do them.
Kyle being Morgan from the Artemis crew. He was a bit of an anal-retentive, so he absolutely adored doing stocktaking. Something about making sure every vial had a place and every place had a vial.
Adea: Groom them for success, give them experience. Make sure that when you’re gone, they can carry on, it’s what I tried to do with Nusin, they -
Genkos stopped, and shook his head. Nurse Nusin had been an officer aboard the Resolution. Genkos had a fondness for that Bolian medic, and since they were visiting their homeworld, they had been more in Genkos’ mind of late. His eyes watered for a moment as he recalled Nusin’s final hours - trapped in one of CloQ’s twisted games, Nusin had died over and over as Genkos and his team tried to save them. After the first few rotations, Nusin was begging for the sweet release of death from the torment that Q had bestowed on them.
Lim: Response
Adea: ::swallowing, and recovering an easier tone:: The other is, save the juicy stuff for yourself. You’re literally in charge, so make it yours. If you want to do research, make sure that’s what you’re assigned.
Lim: Response

"You know, I'm really easy to get along with most of the time, but I don't like bullies and I don't like threats, and I don't like you, Culluh. You can try and stop us from getting to the truth but I promise you that if you do I will respond with all the 'unique technologies' at my command." - Kathryn Janeway
