((Armory tent, Starfleet Compound))
Alex led by example and headed for the large metal crate he had made earlier. Inside where a large number of simple but effective arrows. Alex grabbed two quivers full and 4 large spears. All weapons were made of wood and small metal parts from the pods. Enough to kill any living creature that would get to close to them. Next to him stood Ch’ Clex who took out 4 spears as well. Leaving a dozen behind for those that would remain here. Given the numer of people that should be enough if trouble came their way.
With everyone soon assembled outside the tent again it as time to go. Alex did a quick inspection and hoped they had everything they needed.
ch’Clex: Got all you need there Lieutenant?
Lim: Hopefully.
Looking at everything they packed Alex decided they needed a fast and efficient way to transport the goods.
Williams: Alright, lets see what we have. These strechters can carry a person, but they can also carry the spears we bring along and that medkit and toolbox. So, help me out here for a moment.
Alex took 3 of the spears from Ch’ Clex, and 3 of his own. He put them all on one of the stretchers that layed out on the floor.
Williams: If there is anything else you dont want to carry in your hand, put it on.
With all the gear scattered around, Alex grabbed the second stretcher and laid it over the first, trapping their equipment in between. Using a few pieces of rope from his backpack, he tied the handles on all sides together. The result was a stretcher with a solid roof: whatever was inside would stay dry and protected from any dust storms they might encounter on the way.
Williams: Drex, do we have a stable signa lto focus on.
Drex: For now. Should be enough to find them, and let them know we’re coming. And please don’t break it, I won’t be able to fix it.
ch’Clex: ::Looking at Commander Williams.::Commander we are armed and ready. Ready to move out.
Williams: Alright, say goodbye to this place for now, and lets hope we get back soon, with some, if not all, of our missing crewmembers. Drex, keep a close eye on that signal. The moment it changed, please let me know.
Drex: The signal will get clearer as we approach. At the moment, I can only give a rough direction. ::He raised his left hand, holding the tricorder:: Second dune to the right, and straight on till morning.
Lim: And no need for fairy dust.
Alex laughed, he knew what she was referring too. His father had told him many of the old earth fairy tails. Peter Pan had been one of his favorits. It had adventures, pirtates, native americans, and best of all….flying in a ship!
Williams: Lets hope we don’t run unto Captain Hook today.
ch’Clex : Response
oO Haha… ofcourrse you don’t. Oo
Williams: Earth fairy tails…
Without further delay they began moving towards their destination.
Drex: If the temperature keeps rising like this, we’ll have to be careful with exertion and water. How many bottles do we have in total?
Lim: I’ve got two in my pack.
Williams: I have a full canteen on my belt, and one more in my bag.
ch’Clex : Response
Drex: Commander, we might want to consider traveling at night if the weather turns against us.
Williams: Yeah, lets do this one by the book. So that means I want honesty from each of you. If it gets to warm, if you need a break, if you don’t feel well. You tell me. Last thing we want is people fainting or worse and get us stuck. We don’t need heroics today.
Lim: That would increase the risk of animal attack, wouldn’t it?
oO It might, but sleeping in plain sight during the day might be just as risky. Oo
Williams: No more than being a visible piece of dinner in brought daylight.
ch’Clex / Drex : Response
Lim: Well let me know if any of you get a headache or start to feel nauseous or dizzy.
With the rules layed out, it was time to get underway.
Williams: Keep a close eye on each other and hope we find water and some shade along the way.
ch’Clex / Drex : Response
She squinted into the distance.
Lim: Mirage water or actual water?
ch’Clex / Drex : Response
((Timeskip 1 hour))
And hour had passed and despite the circumstances Alex was pleased with their pace. The compound was well out of sight after they cleared the first dunes. The converted stretcher could easily be dragged through the sand and after an hour's walk everyone had had a turn dragging it through the sand for fifteen minutes. With Alex just finishing his turn, he wiped some sweat off his forehead and took a few quick sips from his canteen.
The heat shimmered above the sand, turning distant shapes into wavering illusions. He slowed his pace just enough to let the others close in.
Williams: Not bad. If we can keep this up, we’ll cover some real ground before the sun forces us to stop.
He glanced at Drex’s tricorder.
Williams: Signal holding steady?
Drex: Response
Williams gave a short nod in reply.
Williams: Alright, same rotation on the stretcher. Fifteen minutes each. Speak up if you’re feeling it.
Lim / ch’Clex: Response
As the group pressed on, the sunlight dimmed for a moment. Alex looked up—and saw why. A vast cloud drifted toward them, but it wasn’t mist or water. It was alive.
Thousands of small shapes wheeled in the sky, a swarm of birds or perhaps locust-like creatures, heading straight in their direction. Whether they would simply pass overhead or descend upon them, Alex couldn’t tell.
He quicly took the bow from his back and took some arrows from his quiver and put them in front of him by tipping their sharp bits into the sand. He then tightened his grip on his bow and rallied the group, ready for whatever might come.
Williams: Eyes up! Stay close.
