((Shorefront Seafood Shack, Bokitu City, Bolarus IX))
Despite his friendship with Araxxu, Drex knew surprisingly little about traditional Bolian cuisine. Since leaving Denali, opportunities to meet had become rare, and with them the chance to experience authentic Bolian culture in any meaningful way.
Now, seated in a restaurant that clearly valued tradition over presentation, he scanned the menu with quiet curiosity, deliberately avoiding anything that sounded overly adapted for visiting tastes. A few entries caught his attention, reminders of things Dr. Vahin had once introduced him to, but he did not linger on them for long. Instead, he let himself rely on recommendation, trusting the judgement of Commander Falt’s father and the simple promise of an experience that had already been vouched for.
Drex: I’ll trust experience.::He closed the menu, a decision not entirely made but getting there.:: What about you, sir? Playing it safe, or are we trusting your father completely?
Falt: I'll definitely follow his advice on all things crustacean, which means I just need to choose between three dishes now. Oh, and you don't need to bother with the 'sir,' it's Tomas when we're off duty.
The Denobulan inclined his head slightly, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.
Drex: Tomas ::Nodding, the smile reaching his eyes this time::
It was not often that senior officers invited that kind of familiarity. So when it was offered, Drex took it without hesitation.
Falt: You don't need to call me sir whilst we're on duty either. We need to make sure the chain of command is clear to the crew so a plain old "Commander" will suffice. Besides, you're the First Officer now, so I defer to you on all ship matters.
The shift back to structure did not catch Drex off guard. Off duty, a name. On duty, a role. Obviously, both mattered, and he had learned, long ago, how to carry each without letting one interfere with the other.
Drex: I don’t have any trouble keeping the two separate.
Falt: ::beckoning the greeter over:: Good. Now how about something to drink whilst we decide on our food order?
The First Officer gave a small nod, glancing once more at the menu. The unfamiliar names held his attention for a moment before one in particular stood out.
Drex: I will try this.. Katrai ::hHe tapped the entry lightly:: it sounds Bolian enough, and warm.
He set the menu down just slightly, expression composed but quietly interested as the greeter approached, ready to take their order.
The greeter arrived, offering a polite smile as Drex placed his order. The Katrai was acknowledged with an approving nod, something in the Bolian’s expression suggesting he had made a respectable choice. Falt followed with his own selection, and within moments the menus were collected and they were left again to the low murmur of the restaurant.Drex let the quiet settle briefly, his gaze drifting across the room before returning to the man across from him. Over two years. Plenty of time to learn how someone worked. Not always enough to learn who they were.
Drex: I was about to say I do not know what you would choose when it is not duty… ::He leaned back slightly, a faint hint of amusement surfacing.:: but that would not be entirely accurate. ::A brief pause, the memory of their camping trip on Bajor surfacing.:: I half expected you to suggest a hike somewhere in the wild instead of this.
Falt: Response
Drex: ::A faint smile lingered as he considered that, the memory shifting easily into another.:: You have a habit of ending up outdoors whenever you are given the chance.
Falt: Response
Drex: Bolarus would make that simple enough, I think. I saw a few rental yards near the coastal ports on the way in. :: A short thoughtful pause.:: A small sailing vessel would not be difficult to arrange. A couple of days along the coast, touching the most interesting areas to explore on foot. ::He smiled warmly.:: What do you think, Tomas?
Falt: Response
